Best Sleep Apps: Tracking, Sounds, Coaching and Better Sleep Routines
Updated
The best sleep apps do different jobs. Some listen from the nightstand. Some mix rain and stories. Some read an Apple Watch. A few coach sleep debt. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Figures come from public listings and named papers captured on 13 September 2026.
This page is for adults choosing a first sleep app. It is not a sleep-clinic device review. Phone stages are estimates. CDC pages (15 May 2024) still want most adults to get 7 or more hours, plus a regular bedtime. If you gasp, stop breathing, or nod off while driving, see a clinician. An app cannot run a sleep study.

Download Sleep Cycle - Tracker & Sounds on the App Store · Get Sleep Cycle - Tracker & Sounds on Google Play
Use this page if you want a smart alarm, a soundscape, or a Watch log. Skip a trophy table. The best sleep apps earn a place by job, not by a blended score.
People without a wearable who want a phone on the nightstand often start with Sleep Cycle. People who mainly need rain, stories, and a timer often look at BetterSleep. Apple Watch owners who want a one-time purchase often look at AutoSleep.
Pillow and SleepWatch sit between Watch tracking and paid extras. RISE sells a sleep-debt and body-clock coach more than a stage graph.
How we compared public listings
We read Apple App Store and Google Play pages, manufacturer help articles, privacy labels, and two independent sleep-app accuracy papers. We did not install the apps. We did not sleep in a lab with them. Missing prices stay missing.
Manufacturer lines such as “40 million downloads” or “91% slept better in a week” are marketing. We do not treat them as trials. Store ratings move. Treat the table as a 13 September 2026 snapshot.
| App | Best for | Platforms | UK price | US price | Subscription | Privacy caveat | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep Cycle | Phone tracker and smart alarm | iOS, Android, Apple Watch, Wear OS | Help page: check in-app checkout. A Feb 2025 UK review mentioned a £35 year prompt; not an official tariff | US IAP list included Premium SKUs such as $39.99 and $57.99; live paywall decides | Free tracking and smart alarm; Premium adds snore tools, full stats, Sleep Aid | Apple: tracking via identifiers; marketing uses coarse location, email, name, IDs. | BetterSleep | Sound mixer, stories, meditations | iOS, Android, Apple Watch, Apple TV | UK IAP list included Premium at £59.99 and £39.99 plus other SKUs | US IAP list included Premium at $59.99 and $39.99; manufacturer May 2026 blog cited $59.99/year or $9.99/month | Trial then paid library (model shifted in 2025 per BetterSleep FAQ) | Apple: tracking via purchases, identifiers, usage. Play: no third-party sharing declared; still collects location and personal info | Free library is thin; not a clinic tracker |

Sleep Cycle: the nightstand tracker
Sleep Cycle is the phone-first tracker on this best sleep apps list. The US App Store page on 13 September 2026 advertised sound analysis or accelerometer tracking, a smart alarm, an AI coach named Luma, and optional snore or cough recording. Size was 315.4 MB. Age rating was 9+. Version 6.26.37 had landed two days earlier.
Google Play’s US listing (updated 7 September 2026) showed 4.3 from about 218,000 reviews in the header. That is a different cell from Apple’s 4.7. Play Data Safety said some location and personal data may be shared, with encryption in transit and a deletion request.
Fino and colleagues (Journal of Sleep Research, 2020; 21 adults, two home nights) compared four apps with portable polysomnography. Sleep Cycle in both microphone and accelerometer modes did not prove reliable for sleep-wake detection. Time in bed correlated. Stages did not. A 2019 Sensors paper from Salzburg also found Sleep Cycle poor at wake detection versus PSG in 27 nights.
Read the full Sleep Cycle review before you pay. Among the best sleep apps, this is the nightstand alarm, not a clinic hypnogram.
BetterSleep: the sound library
BetterSleep, formerly Relax Melodies, is the mixer. The US listing advertised more than 300 sounds, 250 meditations, and 100 stories, plus an optional tracker and recorder. Version 26.16 was dated 31 August 2026. Age rating was 13+. US Apple was 4.7 from 391,000 ratings. Play showed 4.3 from about 397,000 reviews (header), updated 3 September 2026.
BetterSleep’s 4 June 2026 FAQ said the 2025 model moved from a wide free library to a subscription after a trial. Play reviews we sampled complained that once-free mixes locked. That is sentiment, not a lab note. The manufacturer’s own May 2026 comparison blog cited $59.99 a year or $9.99 a month. Twelve monthly US payments at $9.99 would be $119.88 if that SKU is what you see. Confirm checkout.
Play Data Safety declared no third-party sharing. Apple’s label still listed tracking via purchases and identifiers. Sounds can help some people drop off. They do not treat insomnia. See the BetterSleep review for who should skip the year plan.
Watch-first: AutoSleep, Pillow, SleepWatch
AutoSleep is the odd one in this best sleep apps set: $8.99 once on the US App Store, 4.7 from 62,000 ratings, age 4+, 49.9 MB. The listing said no subscription, no extra IAP, and no data upload. That privacy claim is the manufacturer’s. We did not audit the binary. You still need an Apple Watch for the full log.
Pillow is freemium. Help copy dated 29 July 2025 said Premium is annual, with a 7-day trial and no monthly plan on that page. The US IAP list we fetched still showed a $19.99 month, a $59.99 quarter, and a $39.99 year. Twelve months on the monthly SKU is $239.88. The year is $39.99 if that is the SKU you are offered. US Apple: 4.4 from 96,000 ratings, 13+, 711.7 MB.
SleepWatch’s US listing stated Premium at $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Twelve monthly payments are $59.88. The year is cheaper if you stay. Age rating was 16+. The app warns that results are estimates and not medical advice. Some reviews described Health-app write conflicts and odd scores. Those are user reports.
RISE: the schedule coach
RISE measures sleep debt and a daily energy window. The US listing required a paid subscription or trial for the full app and showed Sleep & Energy Premium at $69.99, plus a 7-day trial in the copy. US Apple: 4.7 from 64,000 ratings, 13+. UK Apple: 4.5 from 7,300 ratings, with a £59.99 Premium SKU on the IAP list.
Manufacturer lines such as “83% feel more energy in a week” are not a named trial in the sources below. RISE can ingest Apple Health, Watch, Fitbit, Oura, and even Sleep Cycle files. That makes it a coach layer, not a second PSG.
Accuracy, privacy, and when to skip an app
Fino 2020 is the caution for every phone tracker on this best sleep apps page. Time in bed is the easy number. Wake and REM are not. CDC (15 May 2024) still lists a diary of bed time, wake time, naps, caffeine, and alcohol as something a clinician may ask for. A score out of 100 is optional.
Skip Sleep Cycle if you will treat stages as medical fact. Skip BetterSleep if you only wanted a free fan sound. Skip AutoSleep if you have no Watch. Skip RISE if you will not pay after seven days. Two apps can stack. Add both yearly fees first.
Short nights also pull on appetite. That is a separate habit page: sleep and weight regulation. An app does not fix a 5-hour pattern.
