The best habit tracking apps do different jobs. Some reward a daily tick with a game. Some log a mood in two taps. Some want a written page. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

We compared Finch, Fabulous, Daylio, Stoic, and Bearable from public store listings, help pages, and privacy forms captured on 13 September 2026. We did not run a lab. None of these apps replaces therapy.

Who the best habit tracking apps help

This hub is for people who want a daily cue, not a diagnosis. It suits readers who already know they forget water, a walk, or a two-line note. It also suits people who want a mood chart to take to a clinician.

Skip a new app if a paper calendar already works. Skip it if you need NHS Talking Therapies or another named treatment. The NHS Every Mind Matters pages describe wellbeing tips and a Mind Plan. They do not name these five products as care.

If food and stress loop together, a mood log is only one tool. See our stress eating practical guide before you stack another subscription.

How to read this shortlist

This best habit tracking apps shortlist used manufacturer help pages, Apple and Google listings, privacy policies, and public health pages. Store ratings mix design, billing, and taste. They are not accuracy scores.

UK and US prices sit in separate cells. Apple and Play ratings sit in separate cells. We do not blend them into a Vitality Ledger score.

Play pages we opened did not show a reliable install band. We omit download figures. Manufacturer lines such as “join over 4 million” stay labelled as marketing.

Finch for a pet cue

Download Finch: Self-Care Pet on the App Store · Get Finch: Self-Care Pet on Google Play

Finch is the game in this set. You tick a goal. The bird earns energy and goes exploring. The US listing also names mood checks, bullet prompts, breathing, quizzes, and insights.

Apple named it Editors’ Choice. That is a design note, not an outcome paper. Finch Care PBC says core self-care stays free. Plus unlocks extra shop slots, prompts, and full sound and timer libraries.

Choose Finch if a cute reward is the only way a glass of water gets done. Skip it if you hate seasonal events or if a quiz score would scare you. Those quizzes are not a diagnosis.

Fabulous for guided routines

Fabulous sells a morning system more than a blank tracker. Journeys, coaching audio, and a planner sit on top of habit ticks. The US page still uses “science-proven” copy. We did not find a named trial that backs that line for this product.

Apple sat at 4.4 from 89,000 ratings on 13 September 2026. Play sat at 3.9. That gap is why this desk keeps stores in separate cells. Play reviewers described companion apps and a first week that would not skip “drink water.”

Choose it if you want someone to sequence the day. Skip it if you only wanted a silent list and a low privacy footprint.

Daylio for a local mood map

Daylio is the two-tap diary. You pick a mood and activities. Notes are optional. Charts and a Year in Pixels sit on top. The developer, Relaxio, says it does not host your entries.

That local-first pitch is the privacy reason to start here. Optional backups go to your own Drive or iCloud. Premium adds deeper stats and more icons. A 2026 secondary review still listed $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year. Confirm the SKU on your phone.

Choose Daylio if you want a record you can export, not a coach. Skip it if you need a written morning page.

Stoic for written reflection

Stoic bookends the day with prompts, mood, breathing, and a habit list. Apple’s Editors’ Choice note called out morning and evening reflection. Free journaling exists. Premium and Premium + AI sit on top.

The privacy split matters. The policy says diary text is not readable by Stoic staff. The same policy says optional AI sends journal content to named third-party models. If you will never use AI, leave that plan off.

Choose Stoic if you will write. Skip the AI year if you wanted a notebook that never leaves the device.

Bearable for symptoms plus habits

Bearable is the clinical-adjacent log. Mood is one row among pain, meds, sleep, and custom symptoms. The company says the free tier has no ads and that Premium unlocks extra correlations and older history.

Data lives on Bearable servers, per the store page. That helps if you want a PDF for a GP. It is the wrong model if you wanted a file that never left the phone. The US listing states insights are not medical advice.

Choose it if a habit only matters next to a flare. Skip it as a first “best habit tracking apps” pick if you have no symptoms to track.

Price over 12 months

For the best habit tracking apps, monthly SKUs look small. They add up. Finch Plus at a $9.99 month is $119.88 if you stay the year, which can exceed a $69.99 yearly line. Bearable at $6.99 a month is $83.88, against a $34.99 year on the manufacturer page.

Daylio’s $35.99 year, if that is the SKU you see, undercuts twelve $4.99 months ($59.88). Stoic Premium at $39.99 a year undercuts twelve $6.99 months ($83.88). Fabulous quarterly at $39.99 would be $159.96 if you keep that plan all year.

UK lists for these best habit tracking apps used pounds, not a converted US tag. Do not paste a dollar figure onto a UK receipt. Lifetime SKUs (Daylio PREMIUM $59.99 / £49.99; Stoic $299 / £299) are one-time only if the store still offers them when you check.

Privacy in plain language

A habit app may store goals. A mood app may store how you felt at 22:00. A symptom app may store pain and meds. Those are different risks.

Privacy is the other split among the best habit tracking apps. Daylio is the local-first outlier. Finch and Fabulous collect more account and usage data on their Play forms. Stoic’s AI path is a third-party send. Bearable is a hosted health log.

NICE’s early-value work on digitally enabled therapies for anxiety is a different class: therapist-supported products, not this shortlist. Do not treat a store badge as that pathway.

What the evidence does not do

The best habit tracking apps can support a plan you already have. They are not a cure. We found no product-specific randomised trial for Finch, Fabulous, Daylio, Stoic, or Bearable that would let this desk claim a treatment effect.

WHO’s mental-health fact sheet still points people toward care when distress lasts. NHS Every Mind Matters says its Mind Plan is general support and is not meant to replace a doctor or therapist. The same rule applies here.

Movement still sits beside a journal for many people. That is a separate habit. See exercise for mental wellbeing if the missing tick is a walk, not a mood face.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best habit tracking apps if I want to stay free?
Finch, Daylio, and Bearable all document a usable free core. Finch Plus, Daylio Premium, and Bearable Premium add extras. Confirm what remains after a trial on your storefront.
Which habit app is most private?
Daylio’s policy is the clearest local-first story. Bearable and optional Stoic AI send more off the device. Read the live Apple label and Play Data Safety form.
Do these apps replace therapy?
No. They are logs and cues. NHS and NICE pathways for anxiety or depression are separate. Seek urgent help if you have thoughts of self-harm.
Should I pay yearly or monthly?
If you will keep the extra features for a year, the yearly SKU was cheaper than twelve monthly payments in every US pair we could label. If you are testing, stay on the free tier or a single month.
Are store ratings proof an app works?
No. Ratings mix art, billing, and bugs. We found no branded outcome trial for this shortlist. Use the log as a trend you discuss with a person, not as a result.
