This Walkmeter review is for walkers who want a stopwatch with maps, splits, spoken stats and file export. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. We used Abvio’s site, store listings and the 2018 privacy policy, captured on 13 September 2026.
Who this Walkmeter review is for — and who should skip it
This Walkmeter review is for people who already think in laps, zones and GPX files. The US App Store listing, captured 13 September 2026, calls it a fitness computer with configurable pages, barometric climb, sensor support and training plans. Abvio’s marketing site repeats “more than 250 statistics.” That is a cockpit. It is not a one-tap streak.
Skip it if you want a cheerful step circle and a workplace leaderboard. Use the StepsApp review or Pacer for that. Skip it if a swipe-through stopwatch feels like homework. Several App Store reviews call the learning curve steep even after they keep Elite.
Also skip Walkmeter if you need a huge Android community. Play had about 1,300 reviews against 14,000 on iOS. The products share a name. They are not the same codebase. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and iCloud sync are the centre of Abvio’s 2026 story.

What this Walkmeter review found in the free layer
The free iOS layer, on the public listing, records walking, hiking, running, cycling, skiing, kayaking and more. You swipe pages of stats, maps and graphs. Workouts stay on the phone. Abvio says years of logs take the space of a few songs. Automatic stop detection, Google Maps terrain, weather stamps and HealthKit import or export are listed. Live tracking with invited friends is listed as free and optional.
Voice is a real differentiator on paper. Siri can start, stop and lap. Text-to-speech can read distance, pace and heart rate on a schedule. Version 12.1.55, listed as five days old on our capture, added turn-by-turn navigation: drop points, hear turns, reroute if you leave the path. That is new product work, not a 2009 leftover.
Export formats on the listing include GPX, TCX, FIT, KML and CSV. Strava and MyFitnessPal shares are named. That matters if you already keep a training archive. A step app that only draws a ring will not hand you a FIT file.
Walkmeter price, Elite and the learning curve
A Walkmeter review has to say Elite’s public price list is messy. Elite, the listing says, adds advanced features after a 7-day free trial. Payment renews unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. The US IAP list on 13 September 2026 showed many rows named only “Elite Upgrade,” with $9.99, $14.99, $29.99 and $4.99 among the visible prices. Other country pages showed $2.99 and $0.99 rows. That is not a clean published monthly-versus-yearly table. We will not invent one. Open the in-app sheet and read the period next to the price.
A 12-month US cost therefore depends on which Elite SKU your store shows. If the sheet says $9.99 a month, twelve months would be $119.88. If it says $29.99 a year, twelve months would be $29.99. Confirm before you subscribe. We did not capture UK sterling.
A July 2022 reviewer said Elite was “worth it for the price” after they learned announcements and heart-rate display, and also called the app ambitious and fussy. A 2021 reviewer praised support replies within two days. A 2019 reviewer liked the free history and disliked heavy GPS averaging that cut corners. Those voices agree on depth. They do not agree that the first hour is easy.

| App Store rating | 4.7 from 14,000 ratings (US, 13 September 2026). Age 4+. |
| Google Play rating | 4.4 from about 1,280–1,300 reviews (US, 13 September 2026). Everyone. |
| Play install band | AppBrain mirror listed 100,000+ (captured via search 13 September 2026). Official Play text we fetched did not show a band. |
| Privacy / Data Safety | Apple: data not linked to you includes health and fitness, location, identifiers, usage, diagnostics. Play: may share location and health and fitness; collects those plus app performance; encrypted in transit; deletion request offered. |
| Sentiment (source, n, date) | US App Store 4.7/14k (13 September 2026). Play 4.4/~1.3k reviews. Written reviews stress support quality and interface load. |
| Core features | GPS maps, splits, zones, spoken stats, sensors, GPX/TCX/FIT export, optional live tracking, iOS navigation. |
| Validation | No Walkmeter-specific peer-reviewed accuracy paper found. One Play user (2023) alleged ~20% distance error versus a watch and a known route. |

Ratings on two very different stores
Fourteen thousand iOS ratings at 4.7 is a loyal niche, not a mass pedometer. Play’s 4.4 from about 1,300 reviews is smaller still. Do not average them. The Android build is older in spirit. A December 2025 Play user asked for a tiny one-time fee to reset data and was told Elite funds ongoing work. That is a product stance, not a price we can convert into pounds.
iOS still ships often. Notes in late 2025 and 2026 mention database shrinkage, AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate sources, grade zones, a Cyclemeter Bike Computer accessory and radar tail lights for riders. Walkers can ignore the bike radar. The update pace still signals an active Mac-and-iPhone shop, not a frozen clone.
Walkmeter privacy: on-device first
Abvio’s public pitch is unusual in this category: no username required, data on the phone until you share, optional encrypted iCloud backup. The privacy policy at walkmeter.com/privacy, last updated 25 May 2018 on our fetch, still says Abvio does not share personal information with advertisers, while also listing AdMob, AdSense and Facebook Audience Network as ad providers that support the free app. Read both sentences. Ads can use device identifiers even when workout files stay local.
The same policy lists location, biometric-style workout fields (heart rate, speed, height, weight) and possible transfer to the United States. Sharing to Strava or email is your choice. Deleting the app deletes local data except OS backups, the policy says. Live tracking is opt-in with people you invite. That is clearer than a social pedometer that defaults to a public club.
Apple’s 2026 label listed health and fitness, location, identifiers, usage and diagnostics as data not linked to you. Play Data Safety said location and health data may be shared with third parties. Those two statements can both be true if maps, ads or analytics vendors see some events. Open the live screens if that split matters to you.
Sensors, files and what remains unverified
This Walkmeter review found no PubMed paper on those sensors. The listing names Bluetooth heart-rate straps, bike speed, cadence and power. Step cadence is listed too. A barometer can mark climb. None of that is a medical ECG. We found no Walkmeter paper on PubMed. A 2023 Play review claimed a 20% shortfall versus a G-Shock and a known route. Abvio asked the user to email support. That is one anecdote.
Phone GPS error is well described elsewhere. Hartung and colleagues (2020) showed consumer step tools swing wildly during chores. Case and colleagues (2015) saw better phone-app step counts on a treadmill with the handset in a pocket. Walkmeter is mostly a GPS sport log. Judge it on a repeated outdoor loop, not on a kitchen day.
Calories remain estimates. NHS and CDC still describe adult health in minutes of brisk effort and two strength days, not in a Walkmeter pie chart. If you also lift, keep a separate training log and the progressive overload guide. A beginner gym workout plan will not appear inside Elite. For a simpler mapped alternative, see the MapMyWalk review. The best walking apps hub is the shortlist page.
