Calm vs Headspace is a two-product choice, not a trophy race. Calm sells sleep stories, soundscapes and a polished daily sit. Headspace sells a taught path, then layers coaching and therapy products in some markets. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Listings were captured on 13 September 2026.

The decision rule
Pick Calm if your main job is falling asleep to a story or leaving rain on in the background. Pick Headspace if you want a labelled course that tells you what to play next, and you accept a thinner free sample. If you need human therapy, Headspace’s listing describes licensed therapists and coaches as add-on products. That is not the same SKU as $69.99 of meditation audio. Confirm coverage and price before you tap it.
Price, trials and a three-year bill
On US list copy, both yearly plans were $69.99 on 13 September 2026. The monthly gap favours Headspace: $12.99 versus Calm’s $14.99. Over a year that is $155.88 versus $179.88 if you refuse the annual button. Over three years the yearly path is the same $209.97 for both, if those SKUs hold. Monthly Calm then costs about $72 more than monthly Headspace across 36 bills.
UK money is messier. Headspace printed £9.99 / £49.99 in the GB description. Calm’s GB description still quoted dollars, while IAP showed a spread of Premium sterling prices. Do not convert $69.99 in your head and call it a UK bill.
Calm’s older GB blurb still named a $399.99 lifetime buy. The US IAP list we opened did not isolate a single lifetime row with that label. Treat lifetime as “check live.” Headspace Plus at $94.99 or £74.99 is a different rung. Read the SKU name.
Features: stories versus a syllabus
Calm’s US page leads with Sleep Stories and named narrators. It also lists Daily Calm, Daily Jay, Daily Trip, 7- and 21-day programmes, breathwork, Daily Move, and music. The free download, the listing says, includes some features forever and no ads. Most of the library is paid.
Headspace’s US page leads with 500-plus guided meditations, sleepcasts, and a “proven in 10 days / 2 weeks” style of claim. Those are developer sentences. The methods sit in papers, not in the hero blurb. The same page now sells Ebb, an AI companion, plus therapy and coaching. That mix makes the app feel larger—and busier—than a simple timer.
If you already know how to sit, Calm’s timer and music may be enough. If you do not, Headspace’s course labels are the clearer map. Neither is a substitute for exercise for mental wellbeing or the movement bands in the UK and US physical activity guidelines.
Ratings are not a quality index
Keep Apple and Play apart. Calm’s US Apple sample is huge: 4.8 from 2 million ratings. Headspace matches the 4.8 but on 974,000 ratings. On Play, Calm’s 4.5 sits above Headspace’s 4.3. UK Apple flips the crowd size: Headspace 355,000 versus Calm 325,000, with Headspace a tenth of a star higher.
Play reviews in 2026 for Calm still praise stories and still warn about cancel paths. Headspace reviews talk about load time and a childlike look that some long-term sitters dislike. Sentiment is a mood, not a trial.
Privacy, in plain labels
Both publishers say data is encrypted in transit and that you can request deletion on Play. Both collect more than a local timer would. Headspace’s Apple label lists health and fitness among data linked to you, plus location and contact info. Calm’s Apple advertising section flags user ID, device ID and product interaction.
If you want almost no account file, neither row wins. A paper notebook still exists. If you only want less late-night snacking, an app is the wrong tool. Use the stress eating practical guide.
What trials measured, and what they did not
O’Dea and colleagues (JMIR Mental Health, 2022, PMID 36125880) searched for RCTs of these two apps. They found 14 Headspace trials and one Calm trial. Almost all recruited non-clinical people. Studies were often small. Half of the Headspace RCTs reported a conflict that involved the company, usually free premium access. Two named employee involvement in design or analysis. Only five Headspace trials were preregistered. The Calm trial was not.
In that review, Headspace improved depression in 75% of the studies that measured it. Mindfulness, wellbeing, stress and anxiety improved in at least 40% of studies for each of those outcomes, and were mixed overall. That is not a cure rate. It is a count of mixed papers.
A later Headspace sleep RCT in university staff (N=135, eight weeks versus waitlist; PubMed 41637757) reported better diary sleep quality at several checkpoints and only patchy change in tiredness and device-measured duration. Waitlist designs cannot separate app effects from attention. Treat “Headspace is proven” store lines as marketing.
Who should skip both
Skip both if you need a large free library. That is a different comparison. Skip both if billing anxiety is already high and a seven-day trial feels like a trap. Cancel in the store account, not by deleting the icon.
Skip the meditation SKU if what you actually want is weekly therapy. Headspace may sell that separately. Calm’s listing does not make therapy the centre of the $69.99 year. Neither product should be your only plan in a crisis.
