This Freedom app review asks whether a cross-device block is worth $39.99 a year. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. We used the US App Store page, the UK IAP list, Google Play, freedom.to, the billing FAQ, and the privacy policy last modified 13 September 2023, all captured on 13 September 2026.
Freedom sells a session that can cover a phone and a computer. The free tier exists. Scheduling and Locked Mode sit on Premium. The app cannot replace therapy. It cannot treat ADHD. It hides a list you chose.

This Freedom app review is for adults who lose the same hour on a phone and a laptop. It suits writers, students, and remote workers who want one session on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chromebook, per the site. It suits people who will pay for Locked Mode so they cannot end a session early.
Skip it if you only own one phone and iOS Screen Time already holds. Skip it if you refuse a subscription and will not pay $199 once. Skip it if you wanted a breath, not a green block screen. That job sits with one sec. Skip it if you wanted a tree. That job sits with Forest.
See best screen time apps for the shortlist. For a phone-only hard lock, read the Opal review. If the scroll is also a snack, read stress eating, a practical guide. A walk still sits in the UK and US activity guidelines.
Dated features and store facts
The US listing advertised app and site blocks, a full-internet block that still allows calls and texts, sync across unlimited devices, advance and recurring schedules, Locked Mode, and focus sounds. Premium copy also listed session history, “block all except,” and a Perks catalogue. The site table said website exceptions are Mac and Windows only. Chromebook can block the internet and sites, not apps, on that table.
Version 7.15 (4 September 2026) added Locked Mode toggles for weekly early exits and daily session breaks, with an option to remove them for the whole account. Play’s what’s-new note the same week said adult-content blocking now covers “thousands more” sites. Those notes are the vendor’s. We did not re-test them.
Play requires Device Administrator and Accessibility APIs to keep the app installed and to block chosen apps. The listing said those APIs are not used to collect personal data. Age rating was Everyone.

Pricing: a year, a month, or forever
The US year at $39.99 is the headline. Twelve months at $8.99 is $107.88. The UK year at £39.99 beats £95.88 at £7.99 a month. Forever at $199 or £199 is about five US years at the annual SKU. A higher year SKU ($59.99 / £59.99) also sat on the IAP list. We will not invent which button you see. The site also flashed $99.50 for life on a sale page. Sales end. Check the live till.
The billing FAQ said website prices show in USD. Apple and Google show local currency. Cancel in the same store you used. A website buy can carry discounts the stores do not. A mobile buy stays with Apple or Google. The US listing said turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends.
What named pages actually said
The listing reused Lifehacker (“favorite distraction-killing app blocker”), Time, Huffington Post, and Mashable celebrity names. Those lines are old press. They are not a 2026 trial. Manufacturer “2.5 hours of productive time” and “3 million” users are vendor claims. We do not treat them as a study.
A US Apple review in November 2024 called Locked Mode “ironclad” if you add uninstall protection, then docked a star because blocks sometimes stopped until a reboot. The developer asked for an update and a support mail. Play reviews in July and August 2026 praised airtight blocks and asked for a wider adult filter. Another Play user said scheduled sessions failed to start. The developer pointed to version 7.14.1. Those are user reports.
ADHD copy on Play is marketing. The app is not a diagnosis. This Freedom app review treats a blocker as optional scaffolding, not care.
Privacy: blocks, not a browse log
The privacy policy (last modified 13 September 2023) said Freedom does not track, store, retain, or transmit app or website use. The Insight plugin is the stated exception, and that log stays on the device. Android app blocking sends only the apps you chose to block, not the full install list, to freedom.to. Team admins see name and email for seats, not session content.
The same policy lists Google Analytics, AdWords, Meta Pixel, Firebase, Chargebee, Intercom, and others for the website and crash logs. The Apple privacy label still listed identifiers used to track you across other companies’ apps, plus linked contact info and user content. Play said no third-party sharing, with encryption in transit and a deletion request. Those documents are not the same taxonomy. Read both. We did not audit the binary.
What remains unverified
We did not run Freedom for this Freedom app review. We did not lock a Mac and a phone in the same hour. We did not verify the $99.50 sale after the snapshot. A later Freedom app review would need a live checkout to confirm a sale SKU. Play did not show an install band in our fetch. We found no peer-reviewed outcome paper.
VPN-style Android blocking can fail or drain a battery. Version notes in 2026 mentioned WhatsApp call issues and a VPN that toggled on and off. If your session does not start, that is a support ticket, not a score we invented.
Who should skip Freedom
Skip Premium if you will only block one phone and never use Locked Mode. Skip Forever if you are not sure you will keep the habit. Skip it if Apple’s tracking label is a deal-breaker even after the policy’s “we do not track browsing” line. Skip it if you wanted a pause you can dismiss. That job sits with one sec.
This Freedom app review’s close: pay if one session on two machines will change a week. Do not pay for a 2.5-hour promise the listing does not cite as a trial.
