Sleep & Recovery Comparison
SleepScore vs Sleep Cycle: Contactless Tracking vs Phone-Based Sleep Analysis
This SleepScore vs Sleep Cycle page is a two-product decision, not a ranking of the category. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Facts come from US and UK store pages, SleepScore Play copy, Sleep Cycle privacy labels, and named papers captured on 13 September 2026.
SleepScore’s current phone path is inaudible sonar on a short Android list. Sleep Cycle is a nightstand microphone or accelerometer with a smart alarm. They share a bedside table. They do not share a sensor.

SleepScore vs Sleep Cycle: the decision rule

Download SleepScore Max on the App Store · Get SleepScore Max on Google Play
Pick SleepScore if you already own a phone on the Play support list and you want contactless staging without a wearable. Pick Sleep Cycle if you need iPhone or Android, you care about a smart alarm, or you want a usable free tier. If your Android is not on that list, SleepScore’s own copy sends you to a beta, not to the product in the 2019 papers. Do not add a third brand to break a tie this query does not support.
How each app tracks a night
SleepScore Labs describes inaudible sonar from the speaker and microphone. The phone sits on a clear table. Play copy still names Samsung Galaxy S7 through S21 Ultra and Note 8/9, plus Pixel 2 XL, as validated. Other Androids may join a beta. The Max companion is a different door: a bedside radar unit plus a free iPhone app last updated 16 April 2021 on the US listing we opened.
Sleep Cycle’s listing describes patented sound analysis or an accelerometer mode. A Watch is optional. The smart alarm aims at a lighter phase inside a wake window. Apple’s Editors’ Choice blurb repeats the microphone story.
A fan, a partner or a pet can fool a mic. A covered speaker can break sonar. Neither method is polysomnography. Edit nights when the graph is wrong.
Platforms and who can use each
Sleep Cycle is the cross-platform pick. iPhone, iPad, Watch and Android all appear on official listings. Wear OS is named on Play. That is how a mixed household enters this pair.
SleepScore’s phone sonar path, on the Play text we opened, is Android-only on a dated handset list. iPhone users in this pair need Max hardware, and we could not date a manufacturer unit price. Full entity pages are the SleepScore review and the Sleep Cycle review. The wider shortlist is best sleep trackers.
Price over 12 and 36 months
SleepScore’s US Play maths is simple if the listed SKUs hold. The year is $59.99. Three years are $179.97. Twelve monthly bills are $119.88. Local tax can change checkout. We did not complete a purchase.
Sleep Cycle is not simple. Official help updated 1 June 2026 says you tap a Premium feature to see the fee. A UK user on 21 February 2025 named £35 a year. That is sentiment, not an official cell. If your US year is $39.99, three years cost $119.97. If it is $57.99, three years cost $173.97. Do the sum on the SKU you are offered.
If you might quit after a month, Sleep Cycle’s free alarm can waste less money than a SleepScore year — but only if the free tier still does the job.
Ratings kept in separate cells
Do not blend 4.7 with 3.0 and call it a winner. Sleep Cycle’s US Apple count is 29,000. SleepScore’s Play count is under 1,000. Max’s 4.6 sits on 445 iPhone ratings for a companion that still requires hardware. Age ratings differ (9+ versus Everyone or 4+) because of store rules, not because one graph is safer.
Play comments we sampled on SleepScore described alarms that would not cancel and nights that did not record. Sleep Cycle comments praised the gentle alarm and disliked subscription prompts. Those are public notes, not a lab.
Privacy contrast
Sleep Cycle’s Apple label allows tracking with identifiers. Linked ad data include coarse location, email, name, user ID and device ID. Play says some types may go to third parties.
SleepScore’s Play form on 13 September 2026 said no third-party sharing, collection of location and personal info, encryption in transit, and a deletion request. The Max Apple label lists health, location, contact info and identifiers linked to you. Sonar still needs a microphone and a speaker. Tell anyone who shares the room.
Evidence and what neither app can do
Zaffaroni and colleagues (IEEE EMBC 2019) compared phone sonar with expert PSG in 38 lab nights. Chinoy and colleagues (SLEEP, 2021) put SleepScore Max among seven devices in 34 healthy adults across three lab nights, including a disrupted night. Epoch sensitivity for sleep was high across devices (≥0.93). Specificity for wake was 0.18–0.54. Stage results were mixed. Devices did worse on poorer nights.
Fino, Pluimen and colleagues (Journal of Sleep Research, 2020) put 21 adults through home PSG with four iPhone apps. Sleep Cycle’s sound and motion modes both failed their reliability bar for sleep-wake detection. Time in bed still correlated. A 2019 Salzburg Sensors paper (27 nights) also found Sleep Cycle weak on wake.
Those papers used older builds. Firmware moves. This SleepScore vs Sleep Cycle page has no accuracy trophy.
CDC adult pages still want seven or more hours for most people aged 18–60. Use how much sleep by age for the bands. Short nights can change hunger; that is sleep and weight regulation, not a 0–100 badge. A stiff back after desk days is a five-minute desk mobility problem, not a stage colour.
Gasping, witnessed pauses or sleepiness at the wheel need a clinician. Neither icon replaces a home sleep test.
Who should skip both
Skip SleepScore if your phone is not on the list and you will not hunt Max hardware. Skip Sleep Cycle if you refuse a mic near the bed. Skip both if a nightly score will keep you up.
This SleepScore vs Sleep Cycle close: buy the instrument that matches the night you actually have. Do not buy a third logo to break a tie the evidence does not support.
