This Sleep Cycle review is for people deciding whether a nightstand tracker and smart alarm are worth a subscription. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Ratings, privacy notes, and feature lists come from public pages captured on 13 September 2026, plus named accuracy papers.
Sleep Cycle records the night from a phone. It can use the microphone or the accelerometer. In the morning it shows a graph and a score. That is the product. It is also the accuracy limit.

Download Sleep Cycle - Tracker & Sounds on the App Store · Get Sleep Cycle - Tracker & Sounds on Google Play
Choose Sleep Cycle if you want a phone on the nightstand and a wake window, not a new wearable. It suits people who already charge a phone by the bed. It also suits travellers who will not pack a ring.
Skip it if you need clinic-grade stages. Skip it if a microphone in the bedroom feels unsafe. Apple Watch owners who want on-device logs may prefer AutoSleep or Pillow. People comparing the whole set should start at best sleep apps.
Dated features and store facts
The US listing advertised an AI coach (Luma), a smart alarm that aims for lighter sleep, sound or motion tracking, snore and cough detection, sleep sounds, notes, and long-term trends. Premium extras named on the page included data export, Philips Hue, and Apple Health sync. Wear OS and Apple Watch companions exist. The Play page added Health Connect and an “Awake” morning game.
Sleep Cycle’s freemium article lists free tools (intelligent wake-up, a nightly graph, a sleep goal, limited Sleep Aid) and Premium tools (online backup, full statistics, snore and sound detection, programmes, heart-rate tracking on iOS, coughing, respiratory rate on iOS). We did not re-test that matrix in the app.

Pricing and twelve-month cost
This Sleep Cycle review cannot invent a single worldwide fee. The 1 June 2026 help article says you tap a Premium feature or the statistics tab to see checkout. Web billing goes through resellers such as FastSpring or Paddle, per the terms page.
If your US paywall shows $39.99 a year, the year costs $39.99. If it shows $57.99, the year costs $57.99. If you only see a monthly SKU, multiply by 12 and compare. We omit a fake “from $X” line.
Cancel in the same store that billed you. Apple and Google refunds follow their rules. Sleep Cycle’s terms say in-app subscriptions cancel in the store, not by emailing support alone.
What independent tests actually measured
Fino, Pluimen, and colleagues (Journal of Sleep Research, 2020) put 21 healthy adults (6 men, 15 women) through two home nights with portable PSG and four iPhone apps at once. Sleep Cycle’s accelerometer and microphone modes both failed their reliability bar for sleep-wake detection. Time in bed still correlated with PSG. None of the four apps scored REM.
A University of Salzburg Sensors paper (2019) recorded 27 nights in healthy sleepers. Sleep Cycle, used in sound mode on iOS and Android, struggled to detect wake. That pulled total sleep time and efficiency off the gold standard. Time in bed was the one solid match.
Those papers used older app versions. Algorithms change. Until a new independent PSG paper appears, this Sleep Cycle review treats stages as a sketch. A 2022 research model using microphone chips (not this consumer app) reached about 70% four-class agreement in a lab-like set. That is not a Sleep Cycle validation.
Store reviews we sampled praised the gentle alarm and complained about paywalls, Sleep Aid voice prompts, and graphs that look too smooth. Those are opinions. They match the theme that the alarm is the sticky feature.
Privacy and the microphone
Sound mode needs a microphone. That can capture snoring, talk, and room noise. The listing sells that as a feature. It is also a household-privacy choice. Tell anyone who shares the room. Accelerometer mode avoids some of that, and Fino still found it unreliable versus PSG.
Apple’s label on the US and UK pages listed identifiers for tracking. Linked marketing data included coarse location and contact fields. Play said some data may go to third parties. Both stores said practices vary by feature.
If you want a Watch log that claims to stay on device, read AutoSleep or SleepWatch next. If you mainly want rain sounds, BetterSleep is the other job.
What remains unverified
We did not measure battery drain. We did not confirm Luma’s advice quality. We did not verify “3 million users” or “40 million downloads.” We omitted a Play install band because the US page did not show one.
Manufacturer Play copy that “72% of users confirm their sleep quality has improved” has no methods we could read. Ignore it as outcome evidence.
Short sleep still links to appetite and next-day food choices in public-health pages. That is covered in sleep and weight regulation. Sleep Cycle does not fix a 5-hour pattern.
Who should skip Sleep Cycle
Skip the subscription if the free alarm is enough. Skip the whole app if you will obsess over a 1–100 score. Skip sound mode if you share a room and have not agreed to recording.
This Sleep Cycle review lands here: useful as a clock and a diary. Weak as a sleep-stage instrument. Pay only if the wake window earns the fee you actually see at checkout.
