Pacer Review Is It a Good Walking and Step-Tracking App?

This Pacer app review is for walkers who want an all-day step log, optional GPS walks, and a club. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

Who this Pacer app review is for — and who should skip it

Choose Pacer if you want a phone pedometer that also offers groups, challenges, and a mapped outdoor walk. It suits people who carry the phone most of the day.

Skip it if you need a tiny local file and no account. Walkmeter is the quieter GPS option in our set. Skip it if you only want Apple-native charts; StepsApp is cleaner on iPhone widgets.

Skip it if you cannot change a step goal on the free tier and that goal is too high. Several Play reviews describe that paywall. Confirm the screen on your build.

Dated feature snapshot

The US App Store page captured 13 September 2026 lists automatic steps, flights, calories, distance, and active time. It claims the counter works in a hand, pocket, or bag. It lists Apple Health and Apple Watch sync, GPS mapping for walks and other outdoor sessions, groups, live tracking, and guided plans.

The US Play page the same day adds Fitbit and Garmin sync, Google Fit, and Samsung Health. It also warns that some phones cannot count steps with the screen off. That is a hardware limit, not a hidden setting.

Pacer for Teams is a separate workplace product named in the privacy policy. This review is about the consumer app.

Pricing and the 12-month bill

Pacer is free to download. Premium is an auto-renewing subscription billed by Apple or Google. The 18 August 2026 terms say Pacer does not process the card itself and does not store the full card number.

Cancel in the same store you used. Access to Premium lasts until the paid period ends. The free pedometer remains after that, per the help article on cancelling.

Because the US store showed several yearly prices, there is no single “Pacer price.” Open the subscription sheet and read the SKU. A $19.99 year is a different product promise from a $49.99 year if the features differ. The public page did not map each SKU to a unique feature list.

Store ratings, kept apart

Apple and Google scores are not one number. On 13 September 2026 the US App Store showed 4.9 from 330,000 ratings. Play showed 4.8 from about 968,000 reviews.

High stars are not a step-accuracy paper. They mix design, ads, and support. A 2026 Play review praised the free history. Another dropped the score because the step goal would not move without Premium. A third reported double counting after a time-zone change.

Those are user reports. They are not a sample we drew. They are the public sentiment we can date.

Privacy and Data Safety

The privacy policy effective 18 August 2026 is the clearest long document. Pacer collects account details, goals, optional weight and height, sensor steps, and GPS when you start a mapped session. It says it does not track location by default when a feature does not need it.

Apple Health, Google Fit, and Google Health links are optional. The policy says Pacer does not sell Health Service data or use it for advertising. It may send user-typed text to a third-party AI API for some features, without intending to send name or email.

Play Data Safety still lists third-party sharing of app activity and performance. The free app may show ads. Premium members are not shown ads, per the policy. If you join a public club or share a route, other people — and sometimes search engines — can see what you publish.

International users should note the US hosting clause. UK GDPR export and deletion rights still need the in-app or web request. This desk did not test that flow.

What independent sources actually measured

We did not find a peer-reviewed Pacer-only distance or step trial for this Pacer app review. Class-level app reviews exist. Romeo et al. (2019) found smartphone activity apps added a non-significant 477 steps a day in adults, with stronger signals under three months. That paper does not name Pacer.

Manufacturer copy mentions weight-loss plans. That is marketing. This review does not claim Pacer causes weight change.

What remains unverified

Exact UK prices. The mapping from each IAP name to a feature set. True install counts. Step error on your phone model. Whether live tracking is on by default after an update.

Also unverified: any “happiest walking community” claim. Store quotes are selected. We did not survey users.

Map My Walk remains the better documented route social network if mapping is the only job. Pacer is the better documented step-plus-club hybrid in this set, on public pages only.
