This Opal vs one sec page is a two-product decision after both entity reviews exist. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Facts come from US and UK App Store listings, Google Play, both privacy pages, and a named 2023 PNAS paper, captured on 13 September 2026.
Opal sells scheduled blocks, Deep Focus, and a score. one sec sells a pause before a target app opens. They share a store shelf. They do not share a method.

| Privacy | Apple: tracking identifiers; linked usage for marketing; analytics user ID and device ID. Play: may share location; collects personal info and app activity; “Data isn’t encrypted.” Policy: detailed usage stays on device; friends can see a daily total if you opt in | Play: no data shared or collected. Listing says Accessibility data stays on-device. Optional HealthKit minutes |

Recent Play reviews praised blocks and disliked overlay timers they could not dismiss | US App Store n=24,000 on 13 September 2026. Play n=45,900 same day. Reviews praise the pause; some call lifetime steep and report mid-session re-interventions |
| Evidence / validation | Company lines such as “94% less distracted” are marketing. We found no independent 2026 trial with a sample size we could quote | Grüning, Riedel, and Lorenz-Spreen, PNAS 2023: 280 users, six weeks; 57% fewer target-app openings. Online experiment N=500. Developer is a co-author. Self-selected users. Openings, not minutes |
| Best use case | Work or sleep windows where you want a lock, not a nudge | Apps you still need, but open on autopilot |
| Main limitation | Higher year. iPhone listing needs iOS 18. Unblocks and setting changes can undo a weak rule. Play privacy label is wider than the on-device marketing line | You can tap through a pause. Free tier is one app. iOS setup has used Shortcuts. Hard blocks are extra, not the default |
Opal vs one sec: the decision rule

1 of 5
Download Opal: Screen Time Control on the App Store · Get Opal: Screen Time Control on Google Play
Pick Opal if you want a calendar of blocks, a Deep Focus mode the listing says you cannot bypass, and you will pay about $100 or £100 a year for that lock. Pick one sec if you want the app to stay on the phone, you want a breath or delay before it opens, and you want a year closer to $20 or £20. If you need both a pause and a later hard lock, one sec Pro now lists Strict Block Sessions. That still does not make this a three-app query.
How each app interrupts a tap
Opal’s US listing describes Apple’s Screen Time API, block lists, allow lists, daily limits, calendar rules, and Focus Mode sync. Deep Focus is the hard end. Store copy says you cannot cancel or bypass it. Reviewers still describe changing limits before a timer lands. A lock is only as hard as the settings you leave alone.
one sec’s listing describes Shortcuts automations and a delay before Instagram, YouTube, or any app you pick. The point is friction, not a wall. Re-Intervention kicks you out after a set time and asks for another pause. The 2023 paper found the option to dismiss the opening, not the pep talk, did most of the work.
Neither method is a clinic. A partner’s phone, a tablet, or a browser tab can skip both. Edit the list when the graph is wrong.
Platforms and who can use each
Opal’s US App Store page said “Only for iPhone” and iOS 18 or later on 13 September 2026. The same company also ships an Android app on Play and names Mac on its site. Screen time is device-specific in Opal’s help copy. It does not merge your phone and laptop into one graph.
one sec is the wider Apple set: iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Android exists. A Safari extension covers sites. If your household mixes Pixel and iPad, one sec is the pair that can follow you. For the rest of this desk, start at best screen time apps. The entity pages are the Opal review and the one sec review.
Price over 12 and 36 months
Do the sum on the SKU checkout shows. If Opal’s $99.99 year is what you pay, three years cost $299.97 before tax. If one sec’s $19.99 year holds, three years cost $59.97. UK cells stay in pounds: £99.99 versus £19.99 a year. We will not invent a blended “from £X” line.
If you might quit in a month, one sec’s free single-app tier wastes less money than an abandoned Opal year. If you already need a weekday-morning lock, the Opal year can cost less in failed willpower — but only if Deep Focus stays on.
Ratings kept in separate cells
Do not average 4.7 and 4.8. US counts differ: 88,000 versus 24,000. Play’s larger pile sits on one sec. Editors’ Choice is a store badge, not a lab. Play reviews liked Opal’s blocks and disliked overlay timers. one sec reviews liked the pause and disliked mid-session kicks.
Privacy contrast
This is a sharp split. one sec’s Play Data safety box says no collection and no sharing. The listing says Accessibility Service data stays on the phone. Optional HealthKit minutes are a separate switch.
Opal’s Apple label allows tracking identifiers and marketing use of usage data. Play may share location, lists personal info and app activity, and says data is not encrypted in transit. Opal’s policy still says detailed usage stays on the device. Read both. one sec is the narrower public pipe. iCloud backups still sit with Apple either way.
Evidence and what neither app can do
Grüning, Riedel, and Lorenz-Spreen (PNAS, 2023) followed 280 people who had already installed one sec for six weeks. Target-app openings fell 57%. About 36% of attempts ended after the pop-up. A second online experiment (N=500) found the dismiss button did more than the wait. Limits: no field control group, self-selected users, openings not minutes, and a developer as co-author.
We found no matching independent trial for Opal. Treat the 94% / 93% / 90% member lines as advertising. For how researchers define success beyond a minute count, see screen time app evidence. For the design split itself, see app blocker vs friction.
A calmer evening is also a walk and a meal. That is the exercise for mental wellbeing page and the stress eating practical guide, not an app trophy. Neither icon replaces therapy, and neither diagnoses ADHD even when store copy mentions it.
Who should skip both
Skip Opal if you refuse another $100 year or you will keep raising the limit at 4:55 pm. Skip one sec if a two-second pause just becomes part of the tap. Skip both if iOS Screen Time or Android Digital Wellbeing already holds, and you do not want another graph. Built-in tools are compared in iOS Screen Time vs Android Digital Wellbeing.
This Opal vs one sec close: buy the interrupt that matches the habit you actually have. Do not buy a third logo to break a tie the evidence does not support.
