Forest App Review: Is Gamified Focus Still Worth It?

This Forest app review asks whether a growing tree is still worth a Plus fee. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. We used the US and UK App Store pages, Google Play, forestapp.cc, and Apple and Play privacy labels, all captured on 13 September 2026.

Forest sells a timer. Stay in the session and a tree grows. Leave early and it withers. The free download is real. Ads sit on that free tier. Plus is optional. The app cannot replace therapy. It cannot treat ADHD. It makes a minute visible.

Who this Forest app review is for

Download Forest: Focus for Productivity on the App Store · Get Forest: Focus for Productivity on Google Play

This Forest app review is for adults who want a timer they can see. It suits students who will plant a session before a reading block. It suits people who like a shared room with a friend. It suits people who will accept ads, or pay to remove them.

Skip it if you need a lock you cannot dismiss at 9 a.m. That job sits with Opal or Freedom. Skip it if a withered tree will feel like shame, not a nudge. Skip it if 877.2 MB is too large for a small phone. Skip it if you wanted a breath before a feed. That job sits with one sec.

See best screen time apps for the shortlist. If the scroll is also a snack, read stress eating, a practical guide. A walk still sits in the UK and US activity guidelines.

Dated features and store facts

The US listing advertised a gamified timer, allow lists on iOS 16+, Time Guard schedules, Plant Together rooms, a global board, tags, a timeline, Apple Health sync, Mindful Space sounds, and a Trees for the Future partnership. The site said the community had planted more than two million real trees. That is a vendor line. We did not audit the charity ledger.

Version 5.26.0 landed about a day before our 13 September 2026 capture. Notes for 5.16 and later mentioned a pause you can turn off for a stricter session. Play (updated 10 September 2026) described the same timer, allow list, Time Guard, and ads. Time Guard on Android uses AccessibilityService to see the foreground app, per the listing. Age rating was 4+ on Apple and Everyone on Play.

The manufacturer site claimed 60 million downloads and a 4.8 App Store score. Treat the 60 million figure as marketing. Play did not show a clear install band in our fetch. We omit one.

Pricing: ads, or Plus

The free timer is the product for many people. Ads appear outside an active session, per the site. Plus removes ads and adds coin boosts, extra trees, and earlier seasonal plants, per store and site copy. US year $35.99 (or $32.49 Early Bird) versus $71.88 if you paid $5.99 twelve times. UK year £35.00 versus £71.88 at £5.99 a month. Crystal and elixir packs are extra. They do not replace Plus.

The site said Plus prices vary by region and platform. Refunds go through Apple or Google. Cancel in the store you used. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription, per Apple’s usual billing copy on the listing. We did not invent a 12-month “Vitality Ledger” score.

What named pages actually said

The listing quoted The New York Times: Forest works if your goal is to be more in the moment and talk to the people in the room. That is a feature quote. It is not a lab result. Business Insider is also named on Play. We did not re-fetch those full features for this Forest app review.

US Apple reviews we sampled (2019–2024) praised the dead-tree cost and group rooms. One 2024 review asked for a built-in Pomodoro break. Version notes later added a pause. Play reviews in 2025 and August 2026 liked the idea and complained about crashes, login after reinstall, and menus that stuck. The developer pointed to Cloud Sync and in-app support. Those are user reports.

ADHD and “phone addiction” lines on Play are marketing. This Forest app review does not treat Forest as a clinic tool. A withered tree is a game beat, not a diagnosis.

Privacy: account data and ads

The site FAQ (fetched 13 September 2026) said session data is stored with your account and is not sold to third parties. Play’s Data Safety box the same day said the app may share personal info, and may collect location, personal info, and five other types. Data is encrypted in transit. You can request deletion. Apple’s label listed contact info, including email, for the developer’s advertising or marketing.

Those documents do not use the same words. An account that syncs Plus across devices has to store something. Ads on the free tier are a second channel. We did not audit the binary. The forestapp.cc privacy URL returned an error in our fetch. Read the live policy in the app before you pay.

What remains unverified

We did not run Forest for this Forest app review. We did not grow a tree beside a lab clock. We did not verify the two-million-tree claim with Trees for the Future. We did not verify that every legacy Pro owner still has every Plus perk. Play did not show an install band. We found no peer-reviewed outcome paper.

Allow lists need iOS 16 or later, per the listing. Time Guard on Android needs Accessibility access. If either permission fails, the timer is just a timer.

Who should skip Forest

Skip Plus if the free tree is enough and you can ignore ads. Skip the app if a dead plant will sour the evening. Skip it if you need one lock on a phone and a PC. That job sits with Freedom. Skip it if you wanted a peer-reviewed pause. That job sits with one sec.

This Forest app review’s close: pay if the tree will keep you in the chair. Do not pay for a mental-health claim the store page does not back with a trial.

Frequently asked questions

Is Forest free?
Yes. The site says the core timer, tree growth, group planting, Deep Focus, and Mindful Space are free. Ads appear outside sessions. Plus is optional.
How much is Forest Plus in the UK and the US?
US IAP headlines: $5.99 a month, $35.99 or $32.49 a year. UK IAP headlines: £5.99 a month, £35.00 a year. Crystal packs are extra. Taxes extra.
Does Forest work on Android?
Yes. Play listed Forest: Focus for Productivity, updated 10 September 2026, with ads. We did not re-test Android blocking.
