Runna Review Is the Running Coach Worth Paying For?

Runna Review Is the Running Coach Worth Paying For?

This Runna review asks whether a paid running coach in your phone is worth a year of fees. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. We used Runna’s pricing page, Apple and Google listings, the privacy policy, and named reviews captured on 13 September 2026.

Runna writes a week for you. You pick a distance, a date, and how many days you can run. The app then fills intervals, easy runs, and optional strength. That is a different job from a social feed.

Who this Runna review is for

Runna suits adults who will follow a written week toward a 5K, 10K, half, marathon, or ultra. It also suits people who already own a Garmin, COROS, Suunto, Fitbit, or Apple Watch and want workouts to land on the wrist.

Skip it if you only want to record a Sunday jog. Strava or Nike Run Club can do that with less money. Skip it if you are returning from injury and need a clinician to clear intervals. A checkbox plan cannot see swelling.

Compare the wider field on best running apps before you stack Runna on top of another yearly bill. This Runna review is about the paid week, not the social feed.

Dated features and store facts

The US App Store page on 13 September 2026 listed plans from couch-to-5K through ultra, treadmill and outdoor modes, strength and recovery blocks, and a community. Seller was Strava, Inc. Version 8.54.0 had shipped about six days earlier. Size was 227.6 MB. Age rating was 18+.

Apple’s Editors’ Choice blurb called Runna a pocket-size coach with nutrition and cross-training notes, plus “AI-powered features.” That is Apple’s marketing line. It is not an independent accuracy study.

Google Play’s US listing, updated 7 September 2026, repeated the plan range and added live guidance on compatible devices. It listed Everyone as the content rating. That age mismatch with Apple’s 18+ is a store policy difference, not a finding about who should run.

Pricing and the Strava bundle

runna.com/pricing on 13 September 2026 showed the US year as “$9.99/month” only when billed as $119.99 up front. The true monthly SKU was $19.99. That is a common storefront trick. Do the 12-month sum yourself.

UK annual billing at £99.99 is £8.33 a month if you stay the year. Monthly billing at £15.99 is £191.88 over 12 months. If you might quit after a 12-week 10K block, the month may waste less money.

Strava’s 1 July 2025 pricing update listed a US Strava + Runna year at $149.99. The UK App Store IAP list we fetched showed that bundle at £119.99. Separate yearly bills at US list prices would be $79.99 + $119.99 = $199.98. The bundle is cheaper only if you already wanted both. Strava’s help page said Runna Premium is not included in a normal Strava subscription.

Cancel on the store you used. Trials convert unless you turn auto-renew off in time. We did not find a durable student price on the official pricing page. A Runna review of your own bank statement should use the 12-month sum, not the “per month” year-plan headline.

What published testers measured

Lifehacker’s 17 April 2025 review treated Runna as a structured program with satisfying checkboxes, watch sync, and mobility work. It also called the product relatively expensive and potentially intense for beginners.

Runner’s World published a six-week trial after the Strava deal news. The writer described usable flexibility. The same piece reported physiotherapists and coaches warning that mileage and pacing can jump too fast. A Runna spokesperson said the company does not use AI to generate training plans and that experts, including elite runners, design them. Apple’s Editors’ Choice text still mentions AI-powered features. Those statements can both be true if AI writes insights but not the week. We cannot audit the code.

The Independent later described a four-week 10K block. That is a journalist’s n-of-1. It is not a trial with a control group. Play reviews we sampled on 13 September 2026 mixed praise for structure with complaints about price and audio prompts that needed the screen awake. Those remain user reports.

No PubMed-indexed outcome study of Runna appeared in our search for this Runna review. CDC adult guidance still wants about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and muscle work on two days. Runna can schedule that. It cannot certify it is safe for you.

Privacy and who holds the data

Runna’s privacy policy (fetched 13 September 2026) covers account data, location, and health-related workout fields. The US App Store label said identifiers may be used to track you across other companies’ apps. Linked data included health and fitness, purchases, location, contact info, user content, identifiers, usage, and “other.” Diagnostics were listed as not linked.

Play Data Safety declared no data shared with third parties, collection of location and personal info plus five other types, encryption in transit, and a deletion request. Apple and Google still do not use the same taxonomy. Read both.

Location may run when the app is closed. That drains a battery and extends the map you create. If you also post to Strava, you now have two processors of the same route.

What remains unverified

We did not complete a Runna block for this Runna review. We did not compare prescribed paces with lactate or heart-rate thresholds. We did not verify injury rates.

Manufacturer Trustpilot figures on the Play page are not App Store ratings. We keep them out of the Apple and Google cells. Install counts were not on the official Play page we fetched, so they are omitted.

Post-natal and return-to-running plans are advertised. They are not a substitute for obstetric or physiotherapy advice.

Who should skip Runna

Skip the year if you will not open the app four days a week. Skip it if a human coach already writes your sessions. Skip it if you wanted a free audio library — that is Nike’s lane.

If you also want a brand tracker with ads, adidas Running is a different product. ASICS’ older option lives in the ASICS Runkeeper review. If you lift, keep a simple progressive overload note even when Runna adds strength.

This Runna review’s close: pay when the written week is the habit you lack. Do not pay for a magic PB.

Frequently asked questions

Is Runna free?
You can download it free. Full personalised plans are Premium. The site listed a 7-day trial on 13 September 2026. Some return-to-running or beginner plans have been advertised as free.
How much is Runna in the UK and the US?
US site: $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year. UK: £15.99 a month or £99.99 a year. Taxes extra. Storefronts can differ.
Does a Strava subscription include Runna?
Strava’s help article said no. A separate Strava + Runna yearly SKU exists in some storefronts. Confirm the checkout name before you assume you own both.
Is Runna safe for beginners?
Lifehacker and Runner’s World both flagged intensity. New runners may want a clinician or an in-person coach first. Pain is a stop signal, not a badge.
Does Runna use AI to write plans?
A company spokesperson told Runner’s World that plans are designed by experts, not generated by AI. Apple’s Editors’ Choice text still mentions AI-powered features. We could not audit the difference.
