The best running apps do different jobs. Some store every kilometre. Others sell a race plan. A few stay free and talk you through a tempo. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. Figures below come from public store listings, pricing pages, privacy labels, and named reviews captured on 13 September 2026.
This page is for adults choosing a first or second running app. It is not a medical device review. GPS pace is a training log, not a lab time. If you have chest pain, fainting, or sudden breathlessness, stop and seek urgent care.
Who this best running apps shortlist is for
Use this page if you want a training log, a race plan, or a free guided run. Skip a trophy ranking. Public listings do not prove one app is “best overall.”
Club runners who already wear a Garmin or Apple Watch often want a social feed and segments. That points at Strava. Runners who want a week-by-week 5K to marathon plan often look at Runna. Beginners who want audio coaching without a card may start with Nike Run Club.
People who track walks, rides, and runs in one free-to-start log may prefer adidas Running. ASICS Runkeeper and MapMyRun sit on sibling pages if you want a second free-leaning tracker.
This shortlist of the best running apps will not replace a clinician. It will not promise faster times. A training log still needs honest notes about sleep, pain, and missed days.

How we compared public listings
We read manufacturer pricing and help pages, Apple App Store and Google Play listings, privacy policies, Apple privacy labels, and Google Data Safety sections. We also read named reviews from TechRadar, Lifehacker, Runner’s World, and Tom’s Guide.
We did not install the apps. We did not time GPS on a track. We did not invent a blended score. Missing numbers are omitted. Ratings move. Treat the table as a 13 September 2026 snapshot.

Strava: the social training log
Strava is a multi-sport log with a public feed. The US Play listing we fetched on 13 September 2026 described recording runs, rides, walks, hikes, yoga, and more than 40 other sports. It also advertised device sync, segments, clubs, challenges, and Beacon location sharing.
The free tier still records. TechRadar’s 31 January 2024 review said maps and some progress stats had moved behind the subscription. Strava’s subscribe page still reserves suggested routes, offline maps, and deeper insights for paying users.
UK App Store IAP on 13 September 2026 listed £8.99 a month or £54.99 a year. Twelve months on monthly billing is £107.88 before tax. The annual SKU is the cheaper public path if you stay a full year.
US web pricing on the 1 July 2025 country-price update listed $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year, plus a $139.99 family year and a $149.99 Strava + Runna year. Monthly US billing is $143.88 over 12 months.
Read the full Strava review for privacy labels and store ratings. Hide map start and end points if your front door should stay off the feed. Among the best running apps, this is the social log, not the coach.
Runna: a paid running coach
Runna sells personalised plans for 5K through ultra distances. The US App Store listing on 13 September 2026 also listed strength work, treadmill modes, and sync with Apple Watch, Garmin, and COROS. The Play listing added Suunto and Fitbit.
Strava announced a deal to acquire Runna on 17 April 2025. Both companies said the apps would stay separate for the foreseeable future. A combined annual SKU still appears on Strava’s pricing page and on the UK App Store.
runna.com/pricing on 13 September 2026 listed $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year, with a 7-day trial. The same page showed £15.99 a month or £99.99 a year for the UK. Twelve-month cost is $119.99 versus $239.88 monthly in the US, and £99.99 versus £191.88 monthly in the UK, before tax.
Lifehacker’s 17 April 2025 review praised the structured checklists. Runner’s World later described a six-week trial and reported coaches and physiotherapists warning that some plans feel too dense. A Runna spokesperson told that outlet plans are designed by experts, not generated by AI. We did not re-test those plans.
The US App Store rated Runna 4.9 from 34,000 ratings and marked it 18+. Google Play showed 4.5 from about 32,700 reviews. Those cells are not one score. On a best running apps list, Runna is the paid plan, not the free diary.
Nike Run Club: the free coach
Nike Run Club is the free option on this shortlist. The US App Store page we fetched listed no paid subscription. It advertised GPS pace, distance, elevation, heart rate, shoe mileage, challenges, and audio guided runs.
Training plans were listed for the US, UK, Japan, China, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Guided runs were listed for select countries only. If you live outside that set, the “free coach” may shrink to a tracker plus a thinner library.
US App Store ratings on 13 September 2026 were 4.8 from 419,000 ratings, age 9+. Google Play showed 4.2 from 1.11 million reviews, updated 4 August 2026. That gap is why we refuse a blended score.
Play reviews we sampled mentioned Health Connect sync misses and distance estimates that ran hot. Those are user reports, not our lab notes. Apple’s privacy label lists health and contact data for the developer’s advertising or marketing. Play’s Data Safety section said no data shared with third parties, while still collecting location and other types.
Twelve-month cash cost is $0 or £0 if you stay on the free tier. The trade is Nike’s brand feed and the geo-gated library. See the Nike Run Club review if you want the cheapest of the best running apps in a supported country.
adidas Running: freemium tracker
adidas Running is the former Runtastic tracker. The US App Store copy described GPS logs for running, walking, cycling, and “90+” other sports, plus challenges and wearable sync. The Play listing we fetched on 13 September 2026 still carried ads on the free tier.
Tom’s Guide’s published comparison said Premium added personal records, auto-pause, interval coaching, and deeper plans, at $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year. adidas App Store subscription copy has used the same dollar figures and warned that price varies by location. Confirm the live US checkout.
The UK App Store listing we fetched showed 4.7 from 23,000 ratings and an age rating of 4+. A same-day capture of that storefront’s in-app purchase list included Premium Membership at £7.99 and several annual Premium SKUs. Twelve-month cost on a £7.99 month is £95.88. An annual SKU near £42–£45 is cheaper if it matches the plan you want.
US App Store ratings were 4.8 from 108,000 ratings. Google Play showed about 4.6 from 1.73 million reviews and an update dated 11 September 2026. Manufacturer “millions of users” lines disagreed across storefronts, so we omit an adoption figure.
Premium is the fork. If you only need a GPS diary, the free tier may be enough. If you want auto-pause and adaptive race plans, budget the annual fee and read the adidas Running review. That is the freemium middle of the best running apps table.
Free versus paid, and when to skip
A free app is not always cheaper. Nike Run Club costs nothing at the till. You still give location. Strava’s free log records well. Routes and deeper history often need the year plan.
Runna is the paid specialist. If you will not follow a four-day week, skip the year. adidas Running sits in the middle: free GPS, paid polish.
Skip Strava if you refuse a public map. Skip Runna if you need a clinician for intervals. Skip Nike Run Club if your country lacks the plan list. Skip adidas Running if ads feel louder than the log. Two of the best running apps can stack. Add both yearly fees first.
Privacy, GPS, and what listings cannot prove
Every app here asks for precise location. Strava’s privacy policy says core features need it. Apple listings warn that location may run when the app is closed.
Play Data Safety for Nike Run Club, Runna, and adidas Running declared no third-party sharing on the US pages we fetched. Strava’s Play label said some app-performance and device-ID data may be shared. Apple labels still list tracking or marketing uses. Read both stores.
We found no peer-reviewed trial that validates these apps as medical devices. CDC adult guidance still wants about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus muscle work on two days. If you lift, pair the log with a progressive overload note.
Beginner, race, and club paths
New runners who want a voice in their ear can start with Nike Run Club in a supported country. Keep the first weeks easy. Public health pages still prefer talkable pace over a badge streak.
Race-date runners who want paces written for them can trial Runna for seven days, then decide on the year. If the plan feels too hard, stop. A published review is not your physiology.
Club runners who already have friends on segments will feel the pull of Strava. Set the activity to followers-only before the first upload. Beacon is a safety tool, not a public broadcast, but you still choose who receives it.
Walk-to-run users who want one log for mixed sports can try adidas Running’s free tier for two weeks. Only then look at Premium. Sibling exits still matter: ASICS Runkeeper and MapMyRun.
