The best fitness apps are class libraries and training plans, not clinics. This shortlist is for people who want coaching, classes or at-home sessions and need a clear view of style, dated prices and privacy. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

Who the best fitness apps are for

This page is a selection tool. It is for beginners who want a living-room class, and for people who already lift and want a filmed plan they can repeat.

Skip a paid membership if a free library already covers your week. A timer and a no-equipment full-body home workout is enough for some people. Quiet flats should pair any app with a quiet apartment workout on days the floor cannot take burpees.

We do not crown a “best overall” trophy. Public listings do not support that. The useful split is free video shelves versus paid coaches versus programme memberships.

Best fitness apps compared

One table, six products. Those six names are the entity pages in this cluster. Ratings stay in their own store cells. UK cash appears only where a storefront SKU was captured.

Nike Training Club: the free filmed library

Download Nike Training Club on the App Store · Get Nike Training Club on Google Play

Nike Training Club is the widest free door on this page. The US App Store listing, captured 13 September 2026, showed 4.8 stars from 281K ratings and version 6.72.1 dated 19 May. Age rating is 9+. It needs iOS 17 and watchOS 10. Google Play the same day showed 4.3 stars beside 373K reviews. Keep that cell away from Apple’s 281K.

Nike’s site still says members get strength, conditioning, yoga, pilates, recovery and mindfulness without a fee. You still need a free Nike account. Video-on-demand is limited to a named country list. NTC TV is US-only. Full notes live in the Nike Training Club review.

A free library only helps if you will open a session. Space and a clear screen matter more than a brand name.

FitOn: free classes, optional Pro

FitOn still markets unlimited on-demand workouts without a fee. The US App Store listing showed 4.9 stars from 283K ratings on 13 September 2026. Age rating is 9+. It needs iOS 16. FitOn PRO SKUs on that listing ran from $19.99 to $39.99. The sheet does not label which SKU is six months and which is a year. Check the live offer.

Store copy says Pro adds meal plans, offline downloads, premium music and wearable extras. Individual classes stay free. See the FitOn review for the privacy label.

Freeletics: a paid AI coach, not a free class app

Download Freeletics: Workouts & Fitness on the App Store

Freeletics sells an adaptive plan. The free shelf is real but thin. The US listing said 34 bodyweight HIIT workouts and 100-plus exercises stay free. Play copy still said 20 workouts and 25 exercises. We leave both figures attributed.

US Training Coach SKUs captured on 13 September 2026 included $34.99, $59.99, $74.99 and $79.99. Nutrition bundles started at $49.99. The UK listing showed Training Coach rows from £25.99 to £74.99. A 12-month US Coach bill is $74.99 or $79.99 if you pick those yearly SKUs. Four $34.99 charges would be $139.96.

US App Store sentiment was 4.6 from 22K ratings. Play was 4.2 from about 260K reviews. An August 2026 Play review said the coach is weak for hypertrophy. More in the Freeletics review.

Centr: filmed membership plus meals

Download Centr: Strength & Fitness App on the App Store

Centr is a paid video club with recipes. The US listing showed version 10.7.0 dated 31 August 2026 and 4.8 stars from 21K ratings. The UK listing showed 4.7 from 5.3K. Play showed 4.4 beside 17.3K reviews.

Standard US SKUs were $29.99 a month and $119.99 a year. Standard UK SKUs were £22.99 a month and £93.99 a year. Twelve US months at $29.99 is $359.88. The $119.99 year is the lower cash total if you stay. Store copy names a HYROX-certified 12-week block. That is manufacturer language. Detail sits in the Centr review.

Sweat: programmes, recipes and a community

Download Sweat: Fitness App For Women on the App Store

Sweat is a women’s programme library from The Bikini Body Training Company. The US listing showed 4.6 stars from 43K ratings and version 8.0.1 about two days before capture. It needs iOS 18. Play showed 4.4 stars from about 39.4K reviews.

US standard SKUs were $24.99 a month and $134.99 a year. UK standard SKUs were £18.99 a month and £99.99 a year. Twelve US months at the monthly SKU is $299.88. The download is free. Ongoing use needs a subscription. Cancel and the library goes. See the Sweat review.

BetterMe: plans with a messy checkout

BetterMe bundles home workouts, meal tools and optional coaching. The US App Store showed 4.7 stars from 712K ratings and version 19.26.0 dated 3 September 2026. Play showed 4.5 stars from 659K reviews.

We could not pin one public US or UK rate card. Garage Gym Reviews reported about $19.99 a month on a store path. Play reviews still mention other totals after a trial. BetterMe’s terms, updated 29 July 2026, say the price on the payment screen is the one that bills. Play Data Safety said the app may share personal info, health and fitness data and five other types. Read the BetterMe review before you save a card.

Free, beginner and short-session notes

If you want the best fitness apps with no monthly fee, start with Nike Training Club or FitOn’s class layer. Freeletics still gives a small HIIT shelf. Sweat and Centr do not. Beginners should pick the best fitness apps that let you shorten the session. A fifteen-minute home workout is enough to test a habit.

What the evidence does not show

NHS pages for adults 19 to 64 still use about 150 moderate minutes a week, or 75 vigorous, plus strengthening on two days. CDC adult guidance uses the same minute floors. Those pages do not rank apps.

We found no randomised trial that names these six best fitness apps and reports a fitness change with a sample size we could cite. Stars measure satisfaction. They do not measure a squat in kilograms. Do not blend Apple and Play scores.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the best fitness apps is cheapest for a full year?
Nike Training Club is $0 and £0 on the pages we captured. FitOn’s class layer is also free. Among paid years, Freeletics’ $74.99–$79.99 Training Coach SKUs undercut Centr’s $119.99 and Sweat’s $134.99.
Is there a reliable free option?
Yes. Nike Training Club and FitOn both advertise a working free library. Confirm what is locked after sign-in. Freeletics keeps a smaller free HIIT set.
Do these apps replace a trainer in the room?
No. A screen cannot adjust your knee. Use apps for a plan and a timer. See a teacher or clinician if a move hurts.
Can the best fitness apps make me lose weight?
NHS and CDC pages talk about weekly activity minutes, not app-led fat loss. Store copy that promises fast change is unverified here.
Which app is best for complete beginners?
NTC and FitOn let you pick short, low-kit classes. Sweat and Centr advertise beginner programmes after a trial. Freeletics HIIT can feel sharp if you are new to burpees.
Do I need extra equipment?
A mat is enough for many NTC, FitOn and Freeletics sessions among the best fitness apps. Sweat and Centr also sell gym-based blocks. Check the filter before you pay.
