This Waterllama review is for iPhone users who want a character-led water log. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.
Who this Waterllama review is for — and who should skip it

Download Water tracker Waterllama on the App Store
Choose Waterllama if you like a llama to fill, Apple Watch logging, and widgets on the Home Screen and Lock Screen. It suits people who already live in Apple’s stack.
Skip it if you need Android. There is no Play listing on the pages we opened. Skip it if paywall pop-ups will grate. Public reviews mention them. Skip it if you want a deep history without paying. Premium is listed as the path to edit history and change cup size.
WaterMinder is the cross-platform log in our set. Plant Nanny is the plant game on both phones. For the category page, see the best hydration apps and nutrition products hub.
Dated feature snapshot
The UK App Store page captured 13 September 2026 lists smart reminders, 10+ challenges, 50+ hydration tips, 140 characters, 150+ beverages, an Apple Watch app, widgets (home, lock, control centre), calorie tracking, a goal calculator from weight, activity, and weather, charts, streaks, custom beverages, Apple Health sync, Shortcuts, and Siri. It needs iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 on Apple silicon, watchOS 10, or visionOS 1.
Free features named on that page include intake tracking, reminders, a Watch reminder, streaks, a goal calculator, a custom goal, one llama, a calendar, lock-screen widgets, cup size, oz/ml units, and Health sync.
Premium features named there include 100+ characters, 10+ challenges, 150+ beverages, 10+ reminder sounds, custom beverages, a personalised beverage panel, history edits, and cup-size changes. Future monthly updates are promised for paying users. We did not test how much of the free list still works after an update.
A store event tile named “AI Recap, Siri search, Widgets.” Daily and weekly recaps are described as a reward for hitting the goal. We did not open the recap. Treat “AI” as a product name, not a proof of accuracy.
| Field | What public sources showed |
|---|---|
| Developer | Llama Luna Apps Inc (UK listing). Privacy PDF dated 20 August 2025 on waterllama.com. |
| Current version + last update | Version number was not copied as a clean field from the pages we opened. Requires iOS 17 or later. |

| 12-month cost (estimate) | US: $11.88 if $0.99 is billed every month; $47.88 if $3.99 is the month you are offered. A $19.99 Full Access SKU may be a year or a lifetime — the store list does not say. Check the paywall. |

| US App Store rating | 4.9 stars, 160,000 ratings, age 9+ (13 Sep 2026). Editors’ Choice blurb on review pages. |
| UK App Store rating | 4.9 stars, 5,900 ratings, age 9+ (13 Sep 2026). |
| Google Play rating | No Play listing found. Omit an Android score. |
| Install band | Not verified. Apple does not publish installs the way Play does. |
| Age / content rating | 9+. Health or wellness topics. The UK page did not list advertising in the age box the way some peers do. |
| Privacy / Data Safety | Apple label: user content, usage, diagnostics — not linked to you. HealthKit note: water, caffeine, dietary energy. Policy PDF dated 20 August 2025 says HealthKit data is not for ads. |
| Core features | Tap logging, reminders, characters, challenges, Watch, widgets, Health sync, streaks, oz/ml. |
| Validation | None found. Store copy says features are “based on scientific studies of building healthy habits” — not a named trial. |
Pricing and the 12-month bill
Waterllama is free to download. Premium is billed by Apple. The store text says you can pick a monthly plan, an annual plan, or a one-time purchase. The IAP names do not spell out which is which. “Full Access $19.99” could be either a year or a lifetime. “Water Reminder Tracker $9.99” is equally vague on the public list. That is why this Waterllama review will not invent a single sticker price.
If the $0.99 month is the SKU you see, twelve months is $11.88 before tax. If the $3.99 month is the SKU you see, twelve months is $47.88. A one-time SKU, if that is what the sheet says at checkout, has no renewal. Cancel in iTunes or Apple subscription settings at least 24 hours before the period ends.
UK monthly Full Access at £0.79 is £9.48 over 12 months if that SKU is the one you are billed. Higher tracker SKUs on the UK list run to £14.99. Country storefronts differ. Canada’s listing, for example, is a different sheet. Use your own store.
Store ratings, kept apart
The US App Store showed 4.9 from 160,000 ratings on 13 September 2026. The UK store showed 4.9 from 5,900. Those are separate cells. There is no Play cell to blend.
Apple’s Editors’ Choice note praises the llama and the challenges. User reviews on the US page mention a one-time purchase and a wish for Dark Mode. Others mention subscription pop-ups and a thin free tier. Those are opinions. They are not a sample we drew.
The store page also claims weight loss, better skin, and better mood from drinking water. That is manufacturer copy. This review does not repeat those as facts.
Privacy and HealthKit
Apple’s privacy label on the pages we opened lists no “Data Used to Track You” block of the kind WaterMinder shows. It lists user content, usage data, and diagnostics as not linked to you.
The privacy and terms PDF on waterllama.com is dated 20 August 2025. It says HealthKit data may not be used or disclosed for advertising or use-based data mining. It also says some data may sit in iCloud. We did not audit the binary. A third-party security write-up exists online; we did not treat it as a peer-reviewed paper and we do not repeat unverified packet claims here.
Health sync is optional. If you turn it on, water, caffeine, and dietary energy can move into Apple Health, per the store note. Turn it off if you want the llama to stay on the phone.
What independent sources actually measured
We did not find a peer-reviewed Waterllama trial. NHS pages still describe 6–8 cups and pale-yellow urine. They do not name this app. CDC pages say needs vary by age, activity, and pregnancy. Waterllama’s store text lets you pick male, female, pregnant, or breastfeeding when it calculates a goal. That is still an estimate, not a prescription.
Habit-app research exists as a class. It does not validate this llama. If you also use a meal powder, log food and fluid as separate jobs. Our everyday protein guide and the Huel Black Edition review are not Waterllama plugins.
What remains unverified
The exact iOS version number on the day you install. Which IAP is annual versus lifetime. Whether Dark Mode shipped after the review that asked for it. Any “scientific studies” the store mentions by name. Install counts.
Also unverified: calorie accuracy for mixed drinks. The app can track calories, per the listing. That is not a weighed-food lab.
Waterllama is the better documented Apple-only character tracker in this set, on public pages only. It is not a clinic tool. If you need Android, leave this page and open WaterMinder or Plant Nanny.
