This WaterMinder review is for people who want a tap-to-log water tracker on a phone and a watch. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

Who this WaterMinder review is for — and who should skip it

Download Water Tracker by WaterMinder® on the App Store · Get Water Tracker by WaterMinder® on Google Play

Choose WaterMinder if you want a visual fill ring, custom cups, and a standalone Apple Watch or Wear OS tile. It suits people who already carry a phone or wear a watch all day.

Skip it if you need Android and a quieter privacy sheet. Play’s “data isn’t encrypted” line is public and dated. Skip it if you want a local notes file and no account. A paper jug mark still works.

Skip it if you live in an Android household and your partner uses Waterllama. That app has no Play listing. Plant Nanny is the game-first alternative on both stores.

Dated feature snapshot

The US App Store page captured 13 September 2026 lists a cross-platform log, a standalone Apple Watch app, Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, challenges, friend sharing, hydration graphs, Dark Mode, Siri Shortcuts, and Apple Health sync. It also lists custom cups, other drink types, US oz, UK oz, litres, and millilitres.

A 13 September 2026 version note (8.0.1) added “Coach WaterMoji,” a chat or voice helper that logs drinks and tweaks settings. We did not test that coach. Treat it as store copy.

The US Play page the same day lists a Wear OS app with tiles and complications, a widget, awards, and custom reminders and history as Premium. Default reminders run from 8am to 5pm unless you change them, per that listing. The Play page also says the app contains ads.

HealthKit, per the App Store note, reads and writes weight, gender, and date of birth. That is not a full medical record.

WaterMinder public facts captured 13 September 2026 unless a source date is older. Prices exclude tax. Check the live store.

Coffee, tea, and water all count as fluid on NHS pages. The app still needs you to tap the cup.

Pricing and the 12-month bill

WaterMinder is free to download. Premium is an auto-renewing Apple or Google subscription, unless you buy a listed one-time SKU. The US App Store names a 7-day trial. A trial is typically once per store account. Confirm the sheet on your phone.

Cancel in the same store you used. Deleting the app does not always stop billing. Family Sharing is listed as supported for some purchases.

Because the stores showed several yearly prices, there is no single WaterMinder subscription. A $7.49 “Yearly Offer” is a different till from a $29.99 Premium Year. The public page did not map each SKU to a unique feature list. Open the purchase name before you confirm.

Play IAP prices were not copied as a clean list on the page we opened. Check the live Play sheet if you are on Android.

Store ratings, kept apart

Apple and Google scores are not one number. On 13 September 2026 the US App Store showed 4.7 from 34,000 ratings. The UK store showed 4.6 from 2,800. Play’s header and reviews module disagreed on the same day.

High stars are not a hydration paper. They mix design, ads, and support. A May 2026 Play review said a $14 lifetime offer was charged, then revoked, then refunded, and the offer vanished. The developer asked the user to write in-app support. That is a dated public complaint, not a sample we drew.

Older App Store reviews praise VoiceOver and the Watch log. Those comments are years old. They are not a 2026 lab note.

Privacy and Data Safety

Apple’s privacy label on the US page lists tracking across other companies’ apps and sites using purchases, identifiers, and usage data. It also lists purchase history, device ID, and product interaction for third-party advertising, plus analytics and crash data “not linked to you.”

Play Data Safety is harsher on two points: encryption “isn’t” on, and deletion “can’t” be requested. It also says no data is shared with third parties, and that the app may collect health and fitness and app activity. Those sentences sit on the same card. Read them together.

The privacy policy URL on the store page is an iubenda document (https://www.iubenda.com/privacy-policy/7803420). Terms sit at waterminder.com/terms.html. We did not test an export or a deletion flow. The iOS 7.5.2 notes (23 June 2026 on the version list) added backup and restore under Settings → Export.

If you sync Apple Health, you are sending drink data into Health. That is optional. Turn it off if you do not want a second copy.

What independent sources actually measured

We did not find a peer-reviewed WaterMinder-only intake trial for this WaterMinder review. NHS fluid pages still describe 6–8 cups or glasses and pale-yellow urine. They do not name this app. CDC pages say needs vary. They do not endorse a brand.

The App Store itself says the suggested goal is an estimate based on weight. That matches how most consumer trackers work. It is not a sweat test.

If you also care about protein at meals, keep food and fluid as separate jobs. Our everyday protein guide is not a water log. Huel Black Edition is a powder, not an app.

What remains unverified

Exact Play in-app prices. The mapping from each IAP name to a feature set. True install counts. Whether Coach WaterMoji stores chat text, and where. Whether the Play “can’t be deleted” line still matches the iOS backup tool after an update.

Also unverified: any “award winning” or “millions of users” claim as a census. Store quotes are selected. We did not survey users. We did not time reminder accuracy.

A healthcare worker in modest clothes holds a glass of water beside fruit and vegetables
Public health pages still prefer urine colour and thirst over a branded streak.

WaterMinder is the better documented Watch-plus-Android hybrid in this set, on public pages only. It is not a clinic instrument. If you want a plant game instead, stay with Plant Nanny. If you want Apple-only characters, stay with Waterllama.

Frequently asked questions

Is WaterMinder free?
The download is free. Basic logging is available without Premium. Ads appear on the Play listing. Custom reminders and history graphs are listed as Premium on Play.
How much does WaterMinder Premium cost?
On 13 September 2026 the US App Store listed monthly Premium at $2.99 and several yearly items from $7.49 to $29.99, plus a $49.99 one-time SKU. The UK store listed £2.99 a month and yearly items from £7.49 to £29.99. Check the live sheet.
Does WaterMinder work without a watch?
Yes, according to the store listings. The phone is enough. A watch is optional and listed as a standalone app on Apple Watch and as a Wear OS companion.
Is WaterMinder accurate?
We found no WaterMinder-specific validation paper. The app logs what you tap. It cannot see a glass you forgot. The goal is an estimate from weight, per the developer’s own note.
How do I cancel WaterMinder Premium?
Cancel in Apple or Google subscription settings, not only inside the app icon. Turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends, per the store text. Deleting the app does not always cancel billing.
