This AllTrails review asks whether Plus or Peak is worth a year of money. The free app is a trail browser. Offline maps and alerts sit behind a subscription. Store averages are high. Billing and battery complaints are public too. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.
AllTrails, Inc. sells a trail catalogue with reviews and a recorder. It is not a dedicated backcountry GIS. If you want official OS sheets, look at the Outdooractive review. If you want layered USGS-style maps, look at the Gaia GPS review. For a four-app layout, use best hiking apps.
This AllTrails review is for people deciding whether Base is enough or whether Plus earns £35.99 / $35.99 over 12 months. It is not a field test. We read the US and UK App Store pages, the Google Play listing, alltrails.com/plans, and AllTrails help articles on 13 September 2026.
Who AllTrails is for — and who should skip it
Use it if you want photos, recent comments and filters before a popular day hike. The US store copy, captured that day, emphasises dog-friendly, kid-friendly, stroller-friendly and wheelchair-friendly search across more than 500,000 trails. Apple named it an Editors’ Choice. Wear OS tiles are advertised for Android watches. Apple Watch is listed as compatible (watchOS 10).
Skip it if you need licensed Explorer 1:25,000 as the main map, or if you will not pay for offline use. Skip it if a public activity feed makes you uneasy and you will not change the privacy settings. Skip it if you only want a pavement step counter.
Keep load progression in the progressive overload guide or a beginner gym workout plan, not in a trail-app streak.
Dated features and plans
Three tiers sit on the manufacturer and store pages: Base (free), Plus and Peak. Help centre copy on “benefits of AllTrails premium membership,” captured 13 September 2026, says Plus adds offline trails, parks and custom areas, 3D previews, printed maps, wrong-turn alerts, live sharing and an ad-free mode. Peak keeps those and adds advanced layers, an in-app custom route editor and community heatmaps.
The US listing still describes recording, reviews, Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp sharing, and points of interest. It also says the app may use location when it is not open, which can cut battery life. That is an Apple system warning, not our measurement.
We did not verify a peer-reviewed accuracy study of AllTrails GPS traces. Community difficulty grades are a known weak spot in public reviews. One June 2020 US review praised recording on airplane mode and asked for a 1–10 difficulty scale because easy/moderate/hard felt inconsistent. That is one user’s view, not a trial.
| Field | What the public listing showed |
|---|---|
| Current version / last update | 26.9.20 on US and UK App Stores, about three days before 13 September 2026; Play page said updated 8 September 2026 |
| Platforms | iPhone (iOS 17+), Apple Watch (watchOS 10+), Apple Vision listed, Android and Wear OS in store copy, web planner |
| UK price | Plus £35.99 a year; Peak £79.99 a year (UK App Store IAP) |
| US price | Plus $35.99 a year; Peak $79.99 a year (US App Store IAP and alltrails.com/plans US view) |
| Free / trial / subscription | Free Base. Plus and Peak auto-renew. Help centre: 7-day trial for new Plus or Peak users if activated before subscribe. 12-month cost equals the annual IAP if you stay subscribed |
| App Store rating + count | US 4.9 from 1 million ratings; UK 4.8 from 65,000 ratings |
| Google Play rating + reviews | 4.6 stars; header showed 387,000 reviews, ratings block showed 381,000—treat as “about 380,000–387,000” on that day. Install band not shown on the fetched page, so omitted |
| Age / content rating | Apple 9+ (infrequent profanity or crude humour; advertising; user-generated content). Play: Everyone |
| Privacy / Data Safety | Apple: data linked to you for developer advertising (email, user ID) and analytics (precise and coarse location, user ID, device ID, product interaction, crash and performance). Play: may share location, personal info and other types; collects location, personal info and more; encrypted in transit; you can request deletion |
| Sentiment (source + n + date) | High averages. Negative themes in visible Play and UK Apple reviews include trial charges, hard-to-find cancel paths, battery use, and mileage glitches after Peak. These are public comments, not a survey we ran |
| Core features | Trail search and filters, community photos and reviews, on-trail navigation, activity recording. Plus: offline maps and alerts. Peak: custom routes and heatmaps |
| Validation | No peer-reviewed AllTrails-specific GPS audit found for this page. Do not treat store stars as a geodesy test |
Pricing over 12 months
If you start Plus on the UK App Store and do not cancel, you pay £35.99 for the year. Peak is £79.99. The US Apple IAP and the US web plans page matched $35.99 and $79.99. We did not see a separate monthly UK Plus cell on the fetched Apple page. If your store shows a weekly or monthly offer, treat it as live checkout, not as this article’s figure.
A 7-day trial is useful only if you download a real offline area and walk with the phone in airplane mode. Cancel in Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions before day seven if you do not want the charge. Play reviews in 2025–2026 describe people who missed that step. That is a process risk, not a secret price.
AllTrails says it donates a portion of each subscription to 1% for the Planet. That is manufacturer copy. It is not a reason to skip reading the privacy label.
Ratings and public sentiment
The US Apple average (4.9, 1 million ratings) is high. The UK sample is smaller (4.8, 65,000). Google Play sits at 4.6. Keep those cells separate. Praise clusters around filters and photos. Complaints cover price, battery, ads and billing. Editors’ Choice is not a lab certificate. Komoot’s US page the same day showed 4.7 from 9,500 ratings. See the Komoot review if voice routing is the job.
Privacy and data safety
A hiking app that works without signal still needs to know where you are when you record. Apple’s US privacy label, captured 13 September 2026, said precise and coarse location may be used for analytics and linked to you. Email and user ID were listed under developer advertising or marketing. Crash and performance data were listed under analytics.
Google Play Data Safety the same day said the app may share location, personal info and three other types, and may collect location, personal info and seven other types. Data is encrypted in transit. You can request deletion. Those are developer-declared rows. We did not audit the servers.
Practical steps: set completed activities to private if the app allows it. Do not live-share a solo route to a public feed. Download maps on wifi so you can keep cellular off on the hill. Background location will still drain the battery if recording is on.
What independent reviews actually measured
We did not find a 2026 peer-reviewed AllTrails GPS-error paper. TGO’s April 2026 feature did not publish an AllTrails instrument number. USA Today’s 22 August 2026 note restated Plus at $35.99 and Peak at $79.99. That matches the store. It is not a field trial. Trail-line accuracy on your hill remains unverified. Carry a licensed map if that job is critical.
What remains unverified
Install counts were not on the Play page we fetched, so they are omitted. Monthly UK web prices can differ from Apple IAP; we did not capture a sterling web checkout. Privacy-policy full text timed out on fetch; the store labels above are the dated source.
This AllTrails review also cannot say the app will keep you found. Phones fail. Paths move. A subscription is a map browser with extras, not a rescue service.
