The best hiking apps are route libraries with offline maps, not fitness trophies. AllTrails, Komoot, Outdooractive and Gaia GPS cover different jobs: community trails, voice navigation, official topo sheets and backcountry layers. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.
This shortlist is for adults who want a phone map they can download before a day hike or a hut-to-hut week. It is not for people who only want a step streak. If you still lift in the week, keep hiking as easy aerobic work and use the progressive overload guide for the gym days. New gym-goers can keep strength simple with the beginner gym workout plan.
We compared four widely sold tools: AllTrails, Komoot, Outdooractive and Gaia GPS. We used manufacturer plan pages, Apple App Store listings, Google Play’s AllTrails page, and a April 2026 The Great Outdoors mapping feature. We did not walk a test loop with each app. Store ratings are popularity signals. They are not trail-grade accuracy.
There is no “best overall” trophy here. Coverage and map licences change by country. A UK walker who wants Ordnance Survey sheets is not shopping the same product as a US backpacker who wants USGS layers.
Who this shortlist is for
Choose this page if you need offline maps, a route library, or a way to share a live location. Skip it if you only want a pavement pedometer. Walking-app hubs cover that job. Hiking tools collect location even in the background. That drains batteries and creates a privacy file. Read each store’s privacy label before you pay.
Beginners who want photos and recent mud reports often start with AllTrails. Planners who want voice cues on waymarked European trails often start with Komoot. People who want OS Explorer or Alpine Club sheets often start with Outdooractive. People who stack map layers in remote country often start with Gaia.
How we compared the apps
Each row uses a dated public figure or says “check live.” UK and US prices sit in separate cells. Apple and Google ratings stay separate. We omit unseen install counts and any blended score. TGO’s April 2026 feature still told readers to carry paper and a compass.
| App | Best for | Platforms | UK price | US price | Subscription | Store ratings (separate) | Privacy caveat | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AllTrails | Community trails, photos, filters | iPhone, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS, web | Plus £35.99 / Peak £79.99 a year (UK App Store) | Plus $35.99 / Peak $79.99 a year (US App Store and alltrails.com/plans) | Free Base; Plus and Peak auto-renew; 7-day trial for new Plus/Peak users (manufacturer help, captured 13 Sep 2026) | US App Store 4.9 / 1M; UK App Store 4.8 / 65k; Google Play 4.6 / about 387,000 reviews | Apple label links location, email and IDs to advertising and analytics. Play Data Safety: shares location and personal info; encrypted in transit; deletion request offered | Offline maps and wrong-turn alerts sit behind Plus. Custom routes sit behind Peak. Community grades are uneven |
| Komoot | Sport-specific routing and voice navigation | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, web; Garmin/Wahoo sync claimed | Check live UK store. Official Premium page shows €59.99 a year (€4.99/month billed annually) | Premium $59.99 a year; monthly $4.99; World Pack $29.99 still listed (US App Store IAP) | Free download; first region free on the US listing; Premium subscription for worldwide maps and extras | US App Store 4.7 / 9.5K. Play figure not verified on this pass—omit | Needs GPS and background audio for voice cues. Read the current store label | New accounts lean on Premium. Legacy region packs may not apply |
| Outdooractive | Official topo sheets (OS, IGN, Alpine Club and others) | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, web | TGO (1 April 2026) listed Pro about £2.23/month and Pro+ about £4.45/month; confirm at checkout | Website €29.99 Pro / €59.99 Pro+ a year; US App Store IAP Pro $29.99 / Pro+ $61.99 | Free Basic; Pro and Pro+ billed annually after a one-time 7-day trial (manufacturer plans page) | US App Store 4.4 / 448 ratings. Play star figure not captured in full here—omit the star if unseen | Apple label: data used to track you (identifiers, usage); device ID for third-party ads | US rating sample is small. Former ViewRanger owners still complain in public reviews |
| Gaia GPS | Layered offline maps for remote travel | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, web; Outside account required | TGO (April 2026) listed Premium £39.99 a year; confirm in the UK store | Premium $59.90; Premium with Outside+ $89.90 (US App Store IAP) | Free download; Premium unlocks offline and map library | US App Store 4.8 / 32K. Play rating not verified on this pass—omit | Privacy policy linked from the store (gaiagps.com). Location use in background is expected | No OS maps in the TGO write-up. Learning curve. Outside login is extra friction |
AllTrails: community trails first
AllTrails sells discovery. The US App Store listing, captured 13 September 2026, claims more than 500,000 trails, accessibility filters, and recording on phone or Wear OS. Version 26.9.20 had shipped about three days earlier (302.4 MB; 9+; iOS 17).
Free Base is an online browser. Plus was $35.99 / £35.99 a year on those stores and adds offline maps, wrong-turn alerts, printed maps, live sharing and ad removal. Peak was $79.99 / £79.99 and adds custom routes and heatmaps. The US web plans page showed a 7-day trial then $35.99 a year for Plus. Keep the plan and that is the 12-month cost. Public reviews praise alerts and complain about battery, price and trial billing. Those are anecdotes, not a lab.
Read the full AllTrails review for privacy cells and who should skip it. Do not treat the 4.9 US average as proof the path on your hill is drawn well.
Komoot: routing and voice
Komoot’s US App Store page, captured 13 September 2026, leans on sport-specific surfaces, turn-by-turn voice, offline maps and community “Highlights.” It listed 4.7 stars from 9,500 ratings. Age rating 4+. Size 327.3 MB. In-app items included Premium at $59.99 a year and a $29.99 World Pack.
Official Premium feature pages the same day showed €59.99 billed annually. Benefits named there include multi-day planning, weather along the route, sport-specific maps and 3D maps. The free planner still shows a base map. Offline navigation for new users now sits with Premium in current marketing. Older “buy a region once” stories may not apply to a new account. Check the live paywall.
Komoot is stronger when you already know the sport and the region. It is weaker if you want a huge photo-review catalogue in the AllTrails style. See the Komoot review for a deeper feature table.
Outdooractive: official sheets
Outdooractive is the ViewRanger successor many UK walkers met the hard way. The manufacturer plans page, captured 13 September 2026, prices Pro at €29.99 a year and Pro+ at €59.99, billed as a 12-month term after a one-time 7-day trial. Pro is the offline and official-map tier. Pro+ adds partner premium routes, snow depth and 3D.
The US App Store listing the same day showed version 3.23.17, 4.4 stars from 448 ratings, Travel category, 4+ age rating, 151.3 MB. In-app purchases included Pro $29.99 and Pro+ $61.99. The listing names OS Landranger and Explorer, Harvey, USGS, IGN, Swisstopo and Alpine Club maps among the catalogue. That catalogue is the reason TGO called it a best all-rounder in April 2026.
Public reviews still include former ViewRanger owners who lost one-off map purchases. That is a trust issue, not a star-average issue. Apple’s privacy label on the US page said identifiers and usage may be used to track you, and a device ID may feed third-party ads. Read the Outdooractive review before you migrate a library.
Gaia GPS: layers for remote country
Gaia GPS is a map stack first and a social feed second. The US App Store page, captured 13 September 2026, listed 4.8 stars from 32,000 ratings, 4+ age rating, 126.4 MB, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. It requires an Outside account. Premium IAP showed $59.90. The Outside+ bundle showed $89.90. The copy claims 300-plus maps in the higher bundle, including NatGeo Trails Illustrated, plus Trailforks and Outside media.
TGO’s April 2026 UK note said Gaia lacks OS maps and OS grid references, and listed Premium at £39.99 a year then. That is a magazine snapshot, not today’s till. If you hike mainly in Britain and want Explorer 1:25,000, Outdooractive or OS Maps is the more direct licence. If you cross borders and want overlays, Gaia is the specialist.
User reviews on the US page praise offline use and complain about crashes that wipe a track, plus the odd misplaced path. Those are anecdotes. See the Gaia GPS review for the dated feature list.
Offline maps, paper backups and safety
Download the area on wifi. Carry a power bank. Cold kills batteries. Live-share features are optional. Tell someone the route anyway. TGO’s 2026 feature still told readers not to rely on a phone alone. Apps do not know a washed-out bridge until a human reports it. None of these products is a medical device. They log a path.
How to pick without a trophy ranking
Pick AllTrails if you want photos, filters and a huge review pile, and you will pay Plus for offline. Pick Komoot if voice navigation and sport surfaces matter more than a photo social network. Pick Outdooractive if you need named official sheets, especially OS in Britain. Pick Gaia if you live in layered maps and will learn the interface.
Paying two apps for one season is common. A discovery app plus a map-licence app can pair. Cancel the one you stop opening. Annual plans are the 12-month cost unless a monthly IAP is cheaper in your store—check live, because we do not invent a monthly UK AllTrails cell we did not see.
Free beginners still get a planner in each tool. The paywall hits when you leave signal. That is the moment the subscription either earns the year or does not.
