This Gaia GPS review is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test. It uses Apple and Google listings, Outside’s privacy policy, and dated in-app prices so you can judge a backcountry map app before you subscribe.
A Gaia GPS review is for people who want layers, not a highlight reel. Store copy leans on topographic maps, public land, campsites, ski layers, and offline download. It is a poor fit if you only want a ranked waterfall walk near town. Start with an AllTrails review in that case.
It is also not a gym diary. Strength work still needs its own note, such as our progressive overload guide.
Who this Gaia GPS review is for
Keep Gaia in the shortlist if you walk or drive beyond waymarked loops. The US listing names Gaia Topo, NatGeo Trails Illustrated on paid tiers, private-land layers, hillshade, weather, waypoints, CarPlay, and Android Auto. Winter modes, avalanche-related layers, and OnTheSnow notes appear in the feature list. Fishing and USGS streamflow layers are named for some US waters.
Skip it if you want the cheapest UK OS sheet. That is closer to an Outdooractive review shopper. Skip it if you live on a road-bike planner that talks to a Wahoo. Read our Komoot review instead.
Android users should read the 3.4 Play score before they pay a yearly US or UK list price. iOS users see a different crowd. The split is the story.

Features the stores name in 2026
Play’s 11 September 2026 notes mention in-app chat support, quicker title edits, and a route-planning crash fix. UK iOS 2026.5.1 notes, dated 10 August 2026, mention stability, map-download crashes, and clearer offline region coverage. Earlier 2026 iOS notes name Adventure Modes for hike, off-road, and snow, lock-screen live tiles, and T-Mobile satellite connectivity on supported US setups. Those are vendor claims. We did not test them.
Premium with Outside+ is sold as 300+ maps, Trailforks access, Outside Watch, and magazine brands. That bundle is media plus maps. Do not treat film access as navigation proof.
Gaia GPS price and a 12-month bill
The app is free to download. Navigation extras sit on a subscription. On 13 September 2026 the US App Store listed Gaia GPS Premium at $59.90 and Gaia GPS Premium with Outside+ at $89.90. The UK App Store listed £51.90 and £89.90. Older Member and Outside+ SKUs showed as no longer available. Ignore a $999.99 test SKU on the same list; it is not a consumer plan we can interpret.
If the US Premium list holds, 12 months costs $59.90. Outside+ list is $89.90. UK equivalents are £51.90 and £89.90. We did not verify a current Google Play sticker in the text extract, so we omit an Android-only price. Third-party pages that still quote $39.99 conflict with the Apple list we captured. Prefer the live store on your phone.
Subscriptions auto-renew unless you cancel in Apple or Google settings at least 24 hours before the period ends, per the store legal text.

Gaia GPS ratings split by platform
A 4.8 Apple US score and a 3.4 Play score are not a tie. They are two products in practice for many buyers. The UK Apple pool is tiny at 361 ratings. Do not treat it as a global vote.
Age ratings are 4+ and Everyone. That is not a wilderness safety rating.

Gaia GPS privacy in plain language
Outside Interactive’s policy, updated 3 October 2025, says Gaia GPS and Trailforks collect precise location when you enable location services, because the apps cannot navigate without it. The same policy says some health-related data may be processed for fitness and location services. Device, usage, and advertising tools including Google Analytics are described. You can limit cookies and device location in system settings, at the cost of features.
Play Data Safety, captured 13 September 2026, says personal info and app activity may be shared, location and personal info may be collected, transit is encrypted, and you can request deletion. Apple’s listing points to gaiagps.com/company/privacy.
Tracks you publish can identify where you live if you start at your door. Hide that. Live sharing is a choice, not a duty.
What remains unverified
Vendor copy says “leading navigation tools” and “best-in-class” topos. Those words are not a RMSE table. We did not find a peer-reviewed Gaia GPS accuracy study in the sources we opened.
Play complaints about crashes and logins are common enough to record. They are still anecdotes. iOS praise for offline use is also anecdote. If Android is your only phone, the 3.4 score is the caution, not a ban.
Hill walking still counts toward NHS and CDC minutes. The app does not diagnose altitude illness. A beginner gym workout plan still helps legs. For the wider set, see best hiking apps.
Who should skip Gaia GPS
Skip it if you want a low Play-risk Android daily driver and you dislike troubleshooting. Skip it if you only browse city-park loops. Skip it if £51.90 or $59.90 a year is more than you walk.
Keep it if iOS plus offline US public land is the job, and you accept Outside’s account and privacy stack. Download maps on Wi-Fi. Carry a paper sheet on remote days.
