Huel Black Edition Review Nutrition, Protein, Cost and Who It Suits

A man in a blue sweatshirt and beanie checking food in a cream-coloured kitchen stove
Home cooking lets you grill, trim fat and mix beans into a stew. The week’s average matters more than one plate.

This Huel Black Edition review is for adults who want a labelled high-protein powder to stand in for a rushed meal. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

Who this Huel Black Edition review is for — and who should skip it

Choose Black Edition if you want more protein and fewer carbs than standard Huel Powder, and you will accept a shaker instead of a plate. It suits people who already eat plants and who will still cook real meals most of the week.

Skip it if you need to chew, or if pea or rice protein upsets you. Skip it if you want a greens scoop rather than 400 kcal. That is Huel Daily Greens, not this bag. Skip it if you want a reminder app. That job sits with WaterMinder or Waterllama.

What is in a 90 g serving

The UK formula page captured 13 September 2026 describes a 17:40:40:3 split of energy from carbohydrate, protein, fat, and fibre. Protein comes from pea and brown rice. Fat comes from flaxseed, sunflower, and coconut. Carbohydrate is mainly tapioca starch.

On the Matcha Latte table, one 90 g serving lists 400 kcal, 17 g fat, 19 g carbohydrate, 8.4 g fibre, 40 g protein, and 0.8 g salt.

US product copy on the same day said 400 kcal, 40 g protein, 9–11 g fibre, and “from 15 g” net carbs. The US formula page also showed a 390 kcal line in one table. Listings disagree by a few grams. Use the panel on your bag.

UK site copy said “0 artificial sweeteners.” The Matcha Latte ingredient list still names steviol glycosides from stevia. Stevia is a sweetener. Read the words on the pack, not the slogan.

Huel Black Edition public facts captured 13 September 2026 from uk.huel.com and huel.com unless noted. Prices exclude delivery. Check the live checkout.

Pricing and a 12-month estimate

The UK bag at £30.50 is about £1.79 a meal if the bag holds 17 meals. Subscribe & Save at 10% is about £27.45 a bag. If you replace one meal a day, you need about 30 servings a month. That is about 1.8 bags, which we round to two bags for a simple till. Two bags a month is about £54.90 on subscription, or £658.80 over 12 months, before delivery. Two bags one-off is £61 a month, or £732 a year. Those are estimates. Your pace will differ.

The US bag at $45 is $2.65 a meal at 17 meals. Two bags a month is $90, or $1,080 over 12 months, if $45 is what you pay. A subscribe-and-save cut would lower that. We did not confirm the US percent on the page we opened, so we omit it.

UK mainland delivery is free over £45. One bag at £30.50 may attract £5.99 postage unless you add more. US standard shipping is free over $65, else $9.99. A single $45 bag can ship as a $54.99 door price. Add that before you call it cheap.

Ready-to-drink Black Edition is another product. The US page listed from $4.83 a bottle. Do not mix those tills.

Allergens, caffeine, and who should be careful

The UK formula page repeats “may contain mustard” on flavour tables. Matcha Latte lists matcha, green tea extract, and 68 mg caffeine per 90 g. Skip that flavour late at night if caffeine bothers you. Banana and other tables we sampled did not list that caffeine line.

Huel’s UK help article (30 May 2026) says Black Edition powder is gluten-free and made in a gluten-free facility. The general allergen article says some other Huel products contain oats, gluten, soya, or peanuts. Do not assume the bar or the pasta is safe because the black bag is.

The formula page says: up to one serving a day if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. That is not a licence to replace meals without antenatal advice. People with kidney disease should not jump to 40 g protein scoops without a clinician. People on fluid or salt limits should read the 0.8 g salt line.

What independent sources actually measured

We did not find a Which? or BBC Good Food lab of this SKU for this page. We did not find a PubMed trial that assigns people to Huel Black Edition and reports a clinical endpoint.

What exists is label maths against reference intakes. The UK page says a 2000 kcal intake from the powder meets UK and EU micronutrient reference values. That is a formulation claim. It is not a feeding study we ran. Protein satiety papers exist as a class. They do not prove this bag reduces body weight.

US product copy lists “over 160 health benefits” and a survey of 3,019 US consumers of complete-nutrition brands. That survey is not a Black Edition outcome trial. Treat the number as marketing.

NHS Eatwell still wants fruit, vegetables, and fibre from food. A powder can fill a gap. It should not erase the plate. Our food-label guide helps you compare this panel with a supermarket ready meal. Plant Nanny will not tell you what is in the shaker.

What remains unverified

Taste. Texture. How well the scoop mixes in a bottle versus a blender. The exact live subscribe percent on the US site. Whether your flavour’s fibre is 8.4 g or closer to the US “up to 11 g” line. Third-party lab assays of the bag you buy.

Also unverified: any “taste guaranteed” refund until you read the current terms. We did not file a claim.

Whole fruit still earns a place next to any complete powder.

Huel Black Edition is the higher-protein powder in this set, on public labels only. It is not a prescription. If you want a cheap greens scoop, look at Daily Greens. If you want an app, leave the bag on the shelf.

Frequently asked questions

Is Huel Black Edition a meal replacement?
Huel sells it as a nutritionally complete powdered meal, not a snack protein. One 90 g serving is listed at 400 kcal on the UK Matcha Latte table. It is still a processed powder. It is not a roast dinner.
How much protein is in Huel Black Edition?
The UK and US pages we fetched both say 40 g of plant protein per 90 g serving, from pea and rice. Confirm the panel on your flavour.
How much does Huel Black Edition cost?
On 13 September 2026 the UK site showed £30.50 a bag and from £1.79 a meal, with 10% off on Subscribe & Save. The US site showed $45 a bag and from $2.65 a meal. Delivery rules can add £5.99 or $9.99 under the free-shipping threshold.
Is Huel Black Edition gluten-free?
Huel’s UK help article dated 30 May 2026 says the powder is gluten-free and made in a gluten-free facility. The formula page still warns “may contain mustard.” Read the bag. Other Huel products differ.
Can I live on Huel Black Edition alone?
The company describes it as complete food. This desk does not recommend an all-powder diet. Fibre, caffeine in some flavours, and missing chewing time are reasons to keep mixed meals. Ask a clinician if you plan to replace most meals.
