People look for Sleep Cycle alternatives when the smart alarm feels unreliable, the paywall grows, or they already wear a watch to bed. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

Who these Sleep Cycle alternatives are for

This page is for people who already know Sleep Cycle and want a different nightly tool. It is not a generic “best apps” list. For that wider field, see our best sleep apps hub.

Stay if the free smart alarm is enough and you accept a phone on the nightstand. Leave, or add a second app, if you want a large sound library, a paid-once Watch log, or less microphone use.

We compared public store pages, help articles, privacy labels, and published studies. We did not run the apps in a lab.

How we compared Sleep Cycle alternatives

Each row uses one job, one platform set, and dated public prices. Ratings stay in separate cells. Apple and Google scores are not mixed.

UK and US prices also stay apart. If a storefront showed several in-app SKUs, we list the range and say to check the live checkout. We omit install counts we could not verify on the day of capture.

Apple Editors’ Choice copy praises soundscapes. That is store marketing, not a trial. Older reviews mention a shift from lifetime buys to subscriptions. Apple Watch owners who want a paid-once log Drops the nightly “start tracking” tap that Sleep Cycle still needs on a phone iOS only. Stage labels still come from Apple’s sensors, not a lab.
SleepWatch Check live UK App Store. Store copy lists Premium at $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Other yearly SKUs such as $19.99–$29.99 also appeared (US App Store, 13 Sep 2026). 12-month cost is $39.99 on the named yearly plan, or $59.88 if $4.99 is billed monthly. iPhone and Apple Watch. Age rating 16+. Apple label lists health and fitness data linked to you, plus usage data not linked (13 Sep 2026). Contains advertising. Reviews praise trends after setup. Others say scores swing, or that the app wrote extra sleep into Health until write access was turned off. No independent SleepWatch accuracy trial was found for this page. The listing itself says results are estimates. Watch users who want coaching copy at a lower yearly list price than many sound apps Keeps a smart-alarm story while adding Watch heart-rate fields Subscription. Scores can fight how you feel. Dogs and partners can enter snore clips.
Pillow Check live UK App Store. Premium Sleep Tracking $39.99; Pillow Premium Annual $39.99; Monthly $19.99; Quarterly $59.99 (US App Store, 13 Sep 2026). Help text in July 2025 said only annual plans were offered then. The live IAP list now shows more than one term. 12-month cost is $39.99 on the annual SKU, or $239.88 if $19.99 is billed monthly. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch (iOS 17 and watchOS 10 or later on the listing) US App Store 4.4 from 96,000 ratings (13 Sep 2026). No verified install band. Free basic tracking; Premium for history, recordings, export, and sleep-aid library. 7-day trial described in help pages. Apple label lists device ID, product interaction, and crash data linked to you (13 Sep 2026). The maker says audio processing can stay on device. Apple Editors’ Choice copy likes notes and routine fields. Recent reviews like the alarm window. Some users still want Watch-only start for every preset. No Pillow-specific PSG trial is cited here. People who want a Watch tracker plus a timed smart alarm Closest job swap for Sleep Cycle’s alarm-plus-graph habit, if you already own a Watch Needs a current iPhone. Monthly billing is costly over a year.

BetterSleep if you want sounds more than a graph

BetterSleep (once Relax Melodies) is a mixer first. The US listing on 13 September 2026 advertised hundreds of sounds, meditations, and SleepTales, plus an optional tracker and recorder. That is a different job from Sleep Cycle’s microphone graph.

Ipnos’ own comparison page in May 2026 quoted BetterSleep Premium at $59.99 a year. The US App Store the day we captured it showed several Premium prices, including $39.99 and $59.99. Treat those as separate SKUs, not one official tariff.

Privacy is the trade. Apple says some data may be used to track you across other firms’ apps and sites. If that is a hard no, this is a poor Sleep Cycle alternative even if you like rain sounds.

AutoSleep if you already wear an Apple Watch

Download AutoSleep: Watch Sleep Tracker on the App Store · Get AutoSleep: Watch Sleep Tracker on Google Play

AutoSleep is the cleanest money model on this shortlist. The US price on 13 September 2026 was $8.99 once. The listing says no subscriptions and no extra purchases. Version 6.16 was dated 29 November 2025 on that page.

You wear the Watch. The app fills rings from heart rate, motion, and optional Apple Sleep Stages. It can also guess time in bed if you take the Watch off. That is still a heuristic, not a brain-wave read.

The privacy label is unusually short: data not collected. That is the developer’s Apple form, not an audit. It is still the sharpest contrast with Sleep Cycle’s tracking-via-identifiers label on the same day’s US storefront.

Phone-on-the-table tracking needs a clear nightstand. A Watch does not.

SleepWatch if you want a cheaper Watch coach

SleepWatch can run from a phone on the table or from a Watch. The US listing still names $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the product copy. Other yearly prices also sat in the IAP list. Yearly billing cuts the 12-month cost if you stay.

The app writes sleep into Apple Health unless you turn that off. One 2023 review thread, still on the page we opened, said extra hours appeared until write access was removed. That is a user report, not our test. It is a setup step worth doing on night one.

SleepWatch is 16+ and contains advertising on the US listing. AutoSleep does not. Pick the row that matches how much data you want leaving the Watch.

Pillow if you want a smart alarm on a Watch

Pillow is the closest “start, sleep, wake in a window” swap. It can use the Watch automatically or a phone on the mattress. Premium unlocks long history, audio events, CSV export, and the sleep-aid library, per the US listing captured 13 September 2026.

Neybox’s help centre said in July 2025 that only annual plans were sold. The US IAP list we opened still showed a $19.99 monthly SKU. Believe the checkout on your phone, not a year-old help note.

Store score is lower than Sleep Cycle’s 4.7 from 29,000 US ratings the same day. That is not a quality index. It is a different crowd on a different product.

What you keep on free Sleep Cycle

Many people do not need an alternative. Sleep Cycle’s help page still lists a free intelligent alarm, a nightly graph, a sleep goal, and Health or Health Connect export. Premium adds backup, snore and sound tools, Sleep Aid, and longer stats.

The US App Store on 13 September 2026 showed version 6.26.37, 315.4 MB, age 9+, and 4.7 from 29,000 ratings. US Google Play the same research window showed 4.3 stars from 218,000 reviews in the header and 4.4 from 216,000 in the ratings block. Keep those cells apart. Play said the app was updated 6 September 2026.

Play Data Safety said some data may be shared with third parties, data is encrypted in transit, and deletion can be requested. Apple’s label said identifiers may be used to track you.

A 2019 Journal of Sleep Research home study (Bosi and colleagues) ran Sleep Cycle’s accelerometer and microphone modes beside portable polysomnography in 21 healthy adults. Those modes did not score sleep and wake well enough. None of the four apps in that paper detected REM. That is old firmware. It is still the clearest public warning against treating the graph as a stage chart.

Privacy when you switch

Leaving Sleep Cycle does not delete the old file. Export first if you care about history. Then delete the account in the vendor’s flow, not only the icon.

New apps still want a microphone, motion, or Health access. AutoSleep’s “no data collected” label is the outlier. BetterSleep and Sleep Cycle both flag tracking on Apple’s form. Read the live label. It can change without a news post.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest of these Sleep Cycle alternatives?
AutoSleep was $8.99 once on the US App Store on 13 September 2026. Free tiers on Sleep Cycle and BetterSleep still run. Paid sound libraries cost more over a year than a one-time Watch app.
Is there a good Sleep Cycle alternative with no subscription at all?
AutoSleep is paid once. Sleep Cycle’s free tier still alarms and graphs. BetterSleep, SleepWatch, and Pillow lock extras behind auto-renew plans.
Will my sleep stages match if I switch apps?
Not exactly. Phone microphones, mattress motion, and Watch pulse are different sensors. A 2019 study found Sleep Cycle’s phone modes poor against home polysomnography. Treat week-to-week bedtime as more useful than one night’s pie chart.
Do I need a wearable to leave Sleep Cycle?
No. BetterSleep can stay on the phone. AutoSleep, SleepWatch, and Pillow get more automatic if you already wear an Apple Watch. They do not require a new ring.
Should I export Sleep Cycle before I try an alternative?
Yes if you want the old notes and graphs. Use the vendor export tools, then keep a local copy. Uninstalling the app is not the same as deleting the account.
