Strava vs Runna: Which Running App Is Better?

Strava vs Runna is a two-product choice: a social GPS network versus a coaching calendar. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on lab test.

The Strava vs Runna decision rule

Pick Strava if you want friends, segments and one feed for run, ride and gym. Pick Runna if you want Monday’s session written, with paces pushed to a watch. Buy the annual bundle if you truly use both. Do not buy Runna inside Strava and expect paid Strava tools. Strava’s help page says that standalone Runna buy leaves you on free Strava.

Price, bills and the yearly bundle

Strava’s pricing page, updated 1 July 2025 and still showing those US numbers on 13 September 2026, puts subscribers on one country rate. US tax is extra. The UK App Store listed £8.99 and £54.99. Some older SKUs (£5.99, £59.99) still appeared. Treat those as leftover products.

Runna’s website listed $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year. A 7-day trial is on that page. The same page’s country table included £15.99 and £99.99. Monthly Runna costs more than monthly Strava in the US ($19.99 versus $11.99). Yearly Runna also costs more than yearly Strava ($119.99 versus $79.99).

Strava’s help page says a country price change comes with at least 30 days’ notice before renewal. If you subscribed while travelling, your currency may not match where you live. The same help note says you cannot switch currency on an active sub. You cancel, wait for the end date, then buy again. That is a billing trap, not a feature. The July 2025 Strava press note priced the combined plan at $149.99 a year in the US and said it was annual only. UK App Store IAP included Strava + Runna at £119.99. Separate yearly apps would be $79.99 + $119.99 = $199.98 in the US, or £54.99 + £99.99 = £154.98 in the UK, if those SKUs are the ones you are offered. The bundle is cheaper than that pair. It is still a three-year commitment if you never cancel.

What each app is built to do

Strava records many sports and publishes them to people you follow. The US store card lists routes from de-identified data, challenges, live location sharing and device sync. A free tier still records and shares. Paid tools sit on top. That split is why many people never subscribe.

Runna writes a plan around a race date or a distance. The UK store card lists 5K through ultra, couch-to-5K, strength, recovery and some triathlon plans. Workouts can sync to Garmin and other watches, per that copy. Several UK reviews describe beeps for pace zones. Those are user stories, not our test.

Strava can feel empty if your friends are not on it. Runna can feel lonely if you wanted kudos more than a Tuesday interval. They solve different Tuesday nights. That is the whole Strava vs Runna split.

Ratings are not a winner’s trophy

On 13 September 2026 the US App Store showed Strava at 4.8 from 373K ratings. The UK store showed 4.7 from 128k. Play showed 4.6 from about 1.15 million reviews. Runna’s US App Store figure in our search capture was 4.9 from 34K. The UK store was 4.8 from 25k. Play was 4.6 from about 32.5K.

Do not average those numbers. Different people rate different jobs. A 4.9 on a coaching app can sit next to a 4.8 on a social app and still mean “this tool did its job.” Stars also mix old versions. Runna’s UK listing is 18+. Strava’s is 13+.

Privacy and the social default

Strava’s product is a feed. Routes and segments are built from activity data. Read the privacy policy before you post a home loop. Live location is a chosen share, not a need for every easy run.

Runna’s UK privacy label listed identifiers that may be used to track you across other companies’ apps. The policy URL is runna.com/privacy-policy. Because Strava, Inc. is now the UK store developer, expect group-level data practices to move. We did not audit the servers.

Evidence, gaps and training sense

This Strava vs Runna page does not claim either app makes you faster. We found no current peer-reviewed trial of today’s Strava GPS or of Runna’s plan outcomes in a general sample. Company language about “science-based programming” is marketing until a methods paper exists.
